Himalaya Bay - weekend of 10/7-10/9
Good weekend of diving. Water temps averaged 85 degrees. Friday afternoon, the viz was about 5 feet or so, but it was still enough to see the rocky reef and a variety of marine life. The viz opened up for the night dive. By 8:30 that night, it must have been at least 15 feet. The night dive was one of the best. Max depth 25'. There was lots of life to be seen, including Moray eels, octopi, segmented worms, lobster, crabs, and some of the biggest pufferfish we've seen in this area (almost a foot long). We even saw some small white anemones that only come out at night here.
The viz opened up Saturday to about 15-20 feet. Had some good dives in both bays. We did 2 night dives Saturday, and the viz was the best it had been all weekend. The first one started right after dusk. We saw a couple of morays, octopi, and lobsters. When we finished that dive, we changed out tanks and went on another dive with a friend. This dive proves that the longer you wait to begin a night dive, the more you'll see. We started this dive shortly after 8pm. Immediately we saw dozens of segmented worms covering the bottom. We also saw some of the largest lobsters we've seen out in the bay. The largest one had to be over a foot long. We found 3 moray eels. One of them was at least 15 inches around, probably bigger. We were able to coax it out of its hole a little and saw about 3 1/2 to 4 feet of its body! We also saw 3 octopi out of their crevices munching on their meals. And our friend found a small nudibranch hanging out on a sea cucumber! Definitely the best night dive we've had out here, maybe the best night dive ever! We took our time, spent about 75 minutes underwater with a max depth of 30' and still came up with about 1500psi left in our tanks!
Woke up Sunday to 5-8 foot surf. No diving, but we got a chance to do 8 dives, including a couple of fabulous night dives. Looking forward to returning in a couple of weeks.
