Bought this camera due to its nice video (30 fps at 640 x 480) but can't seem to get good stills. The colors seem to come out wrong, either with red filter or without and using AWB. Is this the reason why Sony isn't really big in U/W photography or is it just me?

Any suggestions will be apreciated.

Yes, that is the reason. Sony's white balance UW comes out to green/blue. The best solution is to get close enough for the flash to do it's job. If the subject is outside flash range do not expect good colors.

This shift is colors is mostly correctable in Photoshop by adjusting the color balance.

Here's a link to some shots from Bonaire with a DSC-P5 internal flash.

Thanks, Cecil.

Really appreciate the tip. Didn't really use flash before as I did not have to with a Canon. Having said that, I am a super newbie at this.

The general rules are to use the flash, get close then closer, macro on, shoot up or level (avoid shooting down) and bracket everything (distance, exposure, flash level). Remember it's digital so the pictures are free.

Thanks. Will try it for this weekend's dive. Can't wait....

Here's a comprehensive review of your camera. It will explain things better than the manual.

You might try using the fluorescent light white balance setting. This will give a little more red in the image. I use a Sony P-10 underwater and a V-1 topside.

The images come out fairly blue. There are some PhotoShop plug-ins discussed at
http://www.wetpixel.com/ and other forums here. They can help with the image adjustments you might want to make.
