Here are a few lessons I learned from watching Thrunderball, made in 1965.

1. The best way to meet foxy chicks when snorkeling is to wait until they get their foot caught in the coral, and then rescue them.

2. The best pickup line once you have rescued a hot babe is, "You swim like a man".

3. The best way to approach a shark encounter is to shoot one shark, to keep the others distracted.

4. The best way to get around when snorkeling is to hitch a ride on a trutle.

5. The best way to prevent a shark from harassing you when diving is to shoot it with your spear gun.

6. Good guys wear white tanks and red exposure suits. Bad guys wear black tanks and black expsosure suits. When one encounters someone in a black wetsuit with black tanks, shoot them with a spear gun.

7. BCD's and weights are not needed when diving off a helicopter, and wearing a white tank.

8. Making love underwater is entirely possible, but creates a LOT of bubbles, and scares the fish.

9. Always carry a huge knife on the leg, and a speargun in the event any divers wearing black wetsuits with black tanks are encountered. See #6.

10. Pen sized devices that replace the tank and regulator are highly desirable, and will save your life on numerious occasions.

11. If you have your mask ripped off you face by a bad guy, grab another mask off the dead guy that is found nearest to your location.

I hear PADI is coming out with a "007 Diving" specialty course.

Wow... does that mean that DIR folks are really bad?

By the way, in 1965 we didn't use BCD's (at least the majority of divers I knew), but weight belts were in use.

In all of my years of diving, I have NEVER seen any thing like that on a shore or boat dive !!!

And now, in my declining years, it wouldn't do any good if I did . . . just fog up my mask!!!

Alas . . . . .

Guys in white tanks don't need scooters.

Putting on a double breasted blazer immediatley following diving is chic.

Eye patches don't wilt when wet.

Hot women have "guardians"

No one has dive hair after a dive.

Calypso cameras need no light to shoot under a boat.

Doubles always look cooler than singles ....

<i was watching the other night too!>

Cheers

They were used in other shots... I thought :D

The BC was introduced in 1956...

Actually I love watching the old Bond movies... don't ask me why :11:

Didn't say they hadn't been invented . . . just said we didn't have them :D (but did sound rather universal, didn't it?)
I took the cheap course . . .

How did one dive without a BCD? You just fin to keep off the bottom? What happened to the poor soul that was 10lbs overweighted? Did they just sink like a rock until they hit the bottom?

Watch some of the old "Sea Hunt" episodes and see how much of the time the divers were actually touching the bottom.

Different times, different concerns . . .

Keep in mind that back in the 50', 60's and into the early 70's recreational scuba diving was a very, very small industry/hobby/sport (you pick your definition)

With no BC's they were a bit behind the times in "Thunderball" and even more so in the '83 Bond movie "Never Say Never Again". In that movie the bad guys graduated to black suits with grey stripes (and yellow stripes for the big cheese bad guy in charge.) But at least they still had one gratuitous speargun shooting.

I noticed lot's of Dacor 900 Pacer XL's in that movie as well as a 600 and what may have been a 360. Apparently Dacor did not pay for any branding in the movie as the decals on most of the purge buttons seem to have been removed.

I still want a tank/dpv/dive light with pnumaticly fired powerheads. That would get you some respect!

Where are all the hot scuba babes these days anyway?

But no matter how hard we try we will never look as cool as James Bond when diving.

If you had one of these bad boys, then you and your buddies could go trolling for dive babes ... you gotta be able to score with a ride like this :05:

My personal favorite is in Tomorrow Never Dies where 007 takes the same breathing mix from a HALO jump (Usually 100% 02, I believe) to the bottom of the ocean.
