We dove on Wednsday and Friday with Conch Republic Divers and our Guide John did
a excellent job of finding us several Nurse Sharks , Green Moray's, Lobsters, a
HUGE Southern Stingray and all the usual characters of the shallow reefs. Capt.
Gary gave us a great (and entertaining) briefing at each of the dive sites as
well as blowing his own horn (a Conch Shell actually) as he entered Tavernier
Creek each morning (wish I had made an .avi) with the mighty Republic VII dive
boat. The water temps were in the mid 70's and vis 30-50'. Turkey day found us
with Amoray Divers and what a treat we had diving The City of Washington and the
Tonawanda, two wrecks in about 30' of water off Key Largo. We saw
Filefish,Trumpetfish,Hogfish ,Highhats and a Scorpionfish just to name a few
thanks to our guide Jarret who did a bang up job of navigating us around a dive
site that made me feel as if I was diving in someones home aquarium, the vis was
excellent and the wrecks and schools of Yellowtail Snappers and Jack Crevalle
made a perfect back drop for my first attempt at U/W digital photography.
Amoray's dive boat is a comfortable pontoon type boat and did I mention that we
beat the crowds by taking the kid's out of school 2 day's early so there was
never more than 10 or so divers on either of these boats that can probably hold
40 or more comfortably. We stayed at Amoray Dive Resort and the boat was
literally 40' from our door step. We also enjoyed hearing the theme song a
modified version of Amore played on the sound system of the Amoray dive boat on
the way back to port. Saturday we rented a 20' angler and tryed our luck
trolling surgical tubes for Barracuda all around Alligator Light we had a few
hits but no hook ups and it started to get a little rough in the ocean so we
hightailed it back inside to catch and release Mangrove Snapper,Grunts,immature
Groupers and countless Puffers. Sunday it was back to Ft. Lauderdale to visit
family and Monday morning back to frigid NY.
