I have learned so much from the boards but I am having trouble following some discussions because I don't know what all the acronyms represent or even some lingo. Anyone out there willing to enlighten a newbie so I can keep up?

Shellbird,
Hi!
This link might help with some of the scuba acronyms:

http://www.learnscuba.com/acronyms.html

(I hope I got that correct.) :)

As far as the non-scuba related ones: when you come across an unfamiliar one, just post and ask. I've done that, with some good results.
Perhaps some of the other folks know of other resources.

Good luck,
Mike

Edited to add: James is a faster typist !!

Thanks guys!! What are bungied wings of death?

BWOD are the wings that are used by strokes. They feel they are invincible to all common sense. They dive convoluted gear, and gear that is extremly unsafe. Avoid anyone with BWOD at all costs. They will likely get the entire boat killed when you have to go down to rescue their fat slob arse!

LOL. Ok, now all kidding aside. I said that just to rile some feathers. BWOD is simply a name given to wings that are wrapped in a bungee cord. Their are many believers in this system, and many who think it is what Bobby Bouchets momma would call "The Devil". If you really want to see some and read info on them, check out the OMS website. They are the most famous maker of these wings.

BWoD? :D

Back-inflating wings, seen on Halcyon, OMS, Dive-Rite etc... BP/Harness WIngs BC configuration.

Edit: James is a faster typer than me too! :jester:

Halcyon has no wing that includes bungees. OMS, and Dive Rite do though.

LOL. 75 words a minute. My job has had me typing every day for the past 8 years. I should be faster than I am now.

What purpose does the bungee serve? Why are these considered dangerous?

The bungee is said to help in deflation of the wing. They claim it makes it more strealined so the wing produces less drag. They say it gives you better trim as it prevents air shifting in the wing.

The nay-sayers, claim that the bungees can cause an entanglement hazard in wrecks or caves. They say that air does not shift, it instead gets trapped in parts of the wing and held there by the bungee. They say that if your deflator hose breaks, you suffer a very quick and massive deflation of the wing. They say it actually produces more drag because your wing is no longer a smooth surface. They also say they are harder to inflate manually, becasue you are fighting the force of the bungee.

Personally, I stay away from the BWOD. Some on this board do use them, like NetDoc, and would be able to give you a good run down of why he likes them.

They theoreticaly streem line you by compressing the air in your BC and sinching up the free fabric on the wing.

Unfortunatly compresed air is less boyant than the same volume of uncompresed air, so you need more volume of compresed air to generate the same lift.. so you need a bigger wing.

And the second problem is not a problem if you buy the right size wing to start with.

Glad to see your diving knowledge is better than your typing skills!

Thanks for the info! I was seeing a lot of discussions relating to this and had no clue what the h-e-double hockey sticks they were talking about!

Happy Diving!!

I'm one of the more vocal folks against bungee wings and though there’s lots of reason to avoid them, this isn’t one of them! The amount of force that the bungees can exert doesn't create any significant difference in density of the gas in the wing. After all, even the bungees don’t open the wing’s OPV, for example.

It took me forever to figure out what the heck "LDS" was! Duh! (Local Dive Shop, I think)

Are there any you can't figure out that aren't on those above links?

Cheers!

If you count the number of times I hit backspace, I'm pretty quick as well. While your grammer and spelling probably would blow the doors off of me, being a software engineer I might be able to hold my own in a typing duel!
