I am new to DIR and am woundering what items (SPG, backup lights...) should be cliped off? Also what size and style clips should you use for each particular item? What is the best way to attach them to, say a SPG, or regulator hose?

Thanks

Your primary regulator’s second stage, SPG, primary light (assuming a canister light) and backup lights are clipped off using bolt snaps. Stage bottles too. For warm water use “medium” bolt snaps, for cold (if you’re wearing gloves) the large snaps as found on this page: http://www.reefscuba.com/ss.htm

Where you're located methinks you'll want to use the medium snaps! :)

Bolt snaps that are connected to permanently attached items (primary reg, SPG and primary light head) are connected with some kind of fusible link, some folks use O rings, I use strips of bicycle inner tube, see: http://www.scubaboard.com/t12241/s.html for some discussion.

Bolt snaps that are attached to items that can be detached from the diver (backup lights) are connected with cave line.

This allows the bolt snap to be either broken or cut away in case of emergency or entanglement.

You’ll find lots of DIR equipment pictures at the following two sites:

what kind of knot do you use on that bit of cave line for that bolt snap to scout connection

I do knot know (hehe..ok that was bad) what the best knot is for this type of rigging, but I try to use a bowline or a square knot for most of it and I haven't lost anything yet. I redo the knots/line setup if I start to see any signs of wear or loosening of the line.

FWIW, I do my SPG with cave line to the bolt snap, my CE lights are both tied with cave line to the bolt snaps, and my primary is an o-ring "tacoed" around the hose and ziptied to the bolt snap. These were all endorsed by the GUE guys when they went over my gear.

I've found a square knot works well. Just make sure you burn the ends up to the knot allowing them to melt the knot very slightly. When doing this correctly your knot will never come undone.
