I was watching a show about an attempted shark attack in South Africa a couple months ago. It dragged on and on and they kept asking, "why did the sharks single out this surfer among all the others"? ?This guy had two separate attack attempts actually. They speculated it might have been urine, since he said he'd peed in his suit but all surfers and divers do that. But what about if you're shivering in the water? Would it send out the same little shock waves under water that a distressed fish does, especially one that was just speared and is trembling in its death throes? This seems to be a shark magnet and I don't think it's the blood. I've seen sharks show up after shooting fish when there is no current that would have carried the blood very far. ??? These little shock waves can travel far and fast and any shark around would pick it up. Just a thought.

Now there's a theory I had not heard. I guess being built like a manatee has it's benefits! :D

Well, if you take a plasic bottle around sharks and squeeze it they will turn on a dime and come after you, heading off only once they figure out it is "just you". try it!

It has been my understanding that most sharks sense primarily the change in a magnetic moment such as that caused by a disturbance or vibration. The hammerhead sharks in particular have extremely sensitive magnetic sensing mechanisms.

Perhaps here in the tropics....but I'd be careful with that build about laying around on an ice flow after an ice dive up in Snowbear's neck of the woods. I hear those white bears are attracted to that shape .....for lunch.....

Yeah, Manatees do resemble seals and walruses in shape :D

Do you open the bottle to get the sound of the water whooshing in and out as you squeeze it? Or do you cap it and just get the plastic "crackling and crunching" sound? I've never tried this.

I never heard of it either. I just thought about it last week. Maybe I'll get some grant money to study it and publish a paper. Maybe I'll be famous....and they'll put me up on Mount Rushmore....... with Washington...Jefferson....Roosevelt............and all those other wide receivers....

Just 'wiggle' each end a bit once it has been compressed and it will produce a kind of clicking sound. The first time I heard it I thought there were dolphins around someplace and it wasn't until I got back on the boat that I found out why I was staring out into the blue the whole dive for once NOT looking for sharks! :)

A dive guide on my first trip to Palau carried the bottle, crinkled it and the sharks would pivot and turn suddenly and he would point at me. At the end of the dive, I was ready to cry. It is pretty profound how they react... I really don't want my freediver spear friends to even hear about this one. Its bad enough that they are alway pulling fish blood and guts out when you least expect it and strewing it about....
