I am planning on buying my wife a bc and possibly the reg and console for her birthday. I know there are plenty of options and certainly lots of info on SB to read, but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on brands or setups for women that are better than others. Thanks for the help.

Depending on how she is built there are lots of differences. Are you planning on suprising her with this? I would not buy for her without her at least trying on the BCD. I was amazed at how differently they all fit when I went to try them on. I have a short torso so I had to try on lots before I found the one I wanted. I settled on the SeaQuest Libra. It's a nice BCD a back inflate. It fits me really well.

It's gotta be fit. Make it a surprise shopping trip or somehow make it happen for her. Don't get a store gift certificate, nothing says a single store will have what is right for her.

She needs to test it in a store pool at the minimum. For dry rough checks have her bring along a sweat shirt to mimic her wetsuit.

Every brand has a ladies version and in some cases the mens items are the best solution.

My wife dives a SeaQuest "Libra" and loves it.

Every brand has a model or two for women. The biggest thing is that each of them is based on a different model woman that they used to measure and make the BC. Shoulder width, torso length, weight, waist size, bust size etc. All vary from maker to maker. And heaven help you if she isn't "standard" measurements. Too small or too big results in more frustration as she might be in a child's size w/o enough lift in the bladder or struggling to find a men's BC to fit her. That's where Zeagle seems to do best with the varying adjustments and various sized modular panels. People with bp/w setups will inevitably put in their plug for their models as well.

It is an excellent idea to take her shopping (make sure all the local dive shops have the models and expected sizes in stock before heading out to the stores), and a bad idea to buy a gift cert to a specific store as inevitably the one that fits her best is in the store you didn't buy a gift cert from. :)

Depending on your dive location, a sweatshirt is plenty to simulate a wetsuit. If you are in colder climes with 7mm 2piece wetsuits or dry suits have her bring heavier clothing to simulate the thickness.

mbwade76,
I am quoting a review on the new womens "Kaila" BCD from Mares. A few stores have had the opportunity to "preview" the product since Nov. As far as I can tell, these BCD's have been very popular with the ladies. It fits so well! Plenty of lift (which is commonly sacrificed) in a womens specific bc, 41lbs in L. The jacket is combo jacket style, and also back inflate. Easy positioning for comfort and security in the water. Anyhow it is definitely worth taking a look at. below is testimony from a satisfied OR diver.

I have definitely taken it out! I've gotten about 13 dives in on it in the last month and I absolutely LOVE this bc! I am totally comfortable in it; buoyancy is much easier to control, plus you have the option of 3 different quick dumps. (never had to use any of them, but it is nice to know they are there and within easy reach!)

Pros: VERY comfortable, esp if you're a female with a long torso. Fits well and doesn't ride up or cause my weight harness to rub on me. Clips are positioned well so it's easy to just un-clip it to take it off. Easy to adjust once've messed with it a bit. Weight integrated pockets are nice and big; I only carry 3 lbs in each pocket but I could probably fit 10lbs EASILY and it isn't bulky. Also can integrate a few pounds in the back ( I have 2, 2 pounders in back). Pockets are good sized (keep a pair of shears in one and my backup light in the other and have just enough room to squeeze in a bottle of mask de-fog or something along those lines). Also has d-rings positioned nicely for console and octo holders. 1 large D-ring on each shoulder; very sturdy; I've had my octo and canon light on one D-ring and a camera clipped on the other no problem. The BIGGEST plus of this BC: I don't notice it. I am completely comfortable in the water with it; once I figured out how I wanted it set up, I know exactly where everything is and can find whatever I need even crappy conditions.

Cons: I would like another D-ring on each shoulder. why is it that ALL womens BCDs only get 1 d-ring at best per shoulder? GRR. only other possible con - the handle is stitched in just above the tank holder, so it can be hard to carry the BC with a tank attached, but you learn how to do it.

Any other questions on it just pm me! I will happily rave about this BC as much as you want!

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I had planned on taking her shopping and I am glad everyone agrees. Very helpful
