I am going on a business trip to Halifax. I will be there for about a month and would like to do some diving while there. Who are the best operators in Halifax? Do they even go out this time of year? What conditions can I expect in April? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Gillty,

There's good and bad about diving here in early spring, generally the best vis of the year... but it's still pretty cold in the pond. We were out today and bottom temps were in the 33 F range, you can expect similar during your stay. That being said, there should be plenty of folks out diving while you're here.... charters are generally up and running, but subject to some snotty weather cancellations.

The shop my wife and I use in the city is Torpedo Rays Scuba Adventures,
http://www.torpedorays.com/. The shop is on the Dartmouth side of the harbour, they pump nitrox and trimix, and run regular charters.... lots of people there to get out and dive with. I've consistently had the best results with Dave Gray as far as charters go, excellent fellow, knows the waters and wrecks very well.... he runs charters to wrecks of all depths and difficulty levels. http://www.skipperdavescharters.com/index.htm

I hope this has been helpful, feel free to pm me if you need any more info or you have specific questions.

safe diving

Bring your drysuit...and your warmest thoughts....:D

I will be bringing my drysuit, my thinsulate woolies, and two pairs of polypropelene underwear. I will probably look like the stay puft marshmellow man when I jump in the water. Has anybody invented a drysuit heater yet???

I had the opportunity to dive with groups from Torpedo Rays a few times I'd have to say they were the most enjoyable bunch I've ever dove with on a charter. We had lots of fun and great beer after the dives.

There are great shore dives in Nova Scotia. Paddy's Head Island on St. Margaret's Bay is a very easy and beautiful shore dive. It's just south of Halifax.
