Anyone dive in Tobermory this weekend? What are the water temps? I am heading there this weekend and I figure I should start preparing mentally for the cold.

Yup... Still the same. Although the wind and air temp this weekend didn't help! For you guys in wetsuits, I would recommend tieing a string around your vital parts.... you'll need it to pull the little fella back out after your dive!:D

Maybe i am becoming a wimp, but this weekend was COLD in Toby. It wouldn't have been sooo bad if the air temp wasn't like 3 degrees. I had a hard time motivating myself to get in my cold damp wetsuit each time

LOL... If it makes you feel better, I had a hard time motivating myself to climb into my drysuit... which is why I spent most of the weekend in front of my wood stove with a good book and a jug of wine! I didn't even put my boat in until Monday!

I would have to agree. I got two in on Saturday (Tugs in Little Tub and the Anchor) Both had minimum temps of 46F which wasn't bad (diving wet) it was the cold air temp while removing gear that was torture. Not much of an opportunity to warm up between dives when you are camping. The weather was worse on Sunday so I managed to working on my drinking skills.

Temperatures can vary several degrees over the span of a few hours as winds change and currents vary. Tobermory has as some very deep areas as well and cold water can well up at any time of year. I haven't seen any increase from 41F at depth so far this year. Winds blowing offshore will drop temps by 10 degrees or more when cold water comes up to replace surface water blown offshore.

I am skeptical of the accuracy of your thermometer though Tamas. 36-38 would be pretty unusual at any time except just after the ice has gone out, and near the surface. You might compare it against a known thermometer to test its accuracy.

That was min temp and from 2 different instruments - believe it or not, makes no diff to me.

reviving this thread. Anyone know the current temp of toby. I plan on diving this weekend and next week. I won't be going to 150 or anything just staying above 60. Anyone know the depth of the thermocline at certain sites?
thanks

Wendy, the temps up in Toby never really fluctuate that much. Throughout the year it will be in the 6-10oC range at depth (warms up a bit towards the end of the year). As of last week, the temps at the Lighthouse were 15oC at the surface and 12oC at the "bottom".

The thermoclines start at the 9-12m range and then again at the 20-21m range. Enjoy your week up there. :D

We will be there this weekend as well. We have an O/W class doing their O/W checkout dives. We are from Red Devil Scuba, Chatham. We are staying at the Happy Hearts Campground, drop in and say Hi...

Folks, it doesn't matter to me, I haven't been to Toby in 3 years. You ask why? It's too damn cold there. No matter the time of year, when the temp is in the low 40s based on my not so bright calculations at times:confused: it still means cold.

Enjoy the dive and the vis is usually good.

By the way, does anyone know if there are any wrecks or wall diving north of Point a Baril right up to Collins Inlet? I'm out of Britt and wouldn't mind checking things out if there is something to check:D

Ah you big baby! The water is baumy! You just need to dress properly... Besides, how many towns can you walk down the main street of town in dive gear and nobody even bats an eye!

As of last weekend, the surface temp was 62F. I took a ride past the Caves and all kinds of folks were swimming and jumping off the cliffs there. The bottom of the Forest City was up to a sweltering 42. I almost took my hood and gloves off! :D
