Anyone regularly dive Travis after work, like around 630pm. How's the vis? I only dive Travis on the weekends and there are always so many people there that the vis gets pretty bad.

Is it better on weekday nights? I'm thinking of going there once a week or so after work rather than doing it on the weekend.

I have never dove Travis after work, but it is something I am looking to try out this summer. I just need to get all my gear together and do it. I am sure the vis is better than on the weekend with all the classes.

I dive after work. It's nice having the place to yourself and by mid week the viz is usually alot better.

Yeah I'm thinking of making regular trips there on Wed night, just make it part of my routine.

I might be up for a regular weekly dive since the weekends seem to book up with non-dive related events.

Let me know and I would be happy to join you.

Windy Point or Mansfield? I would be up for it when I get back from Belize, if you need a buddy.

Well I think Windy Pnt is cheaper during the week $5, versus $8 for Mansfield. It's also slightly closer, but I've dove both sites several times. I think in all I prefer the layout of Windy Point and the way it drops off. On the weekends we've been going to Mansfield lately since it's less crowded and vis is better, but during the week I bet Windy Point vis is just as good if not better.

Maybe we can get some people to meet up. My g/f dives and I might be able to talk her into it as well. I've actually got the itch and might consider trying to dive tomorrow after work.

How good do you think the vis is during mid week?

PS - nice car if that's yours. 426 or 440?

Windy Point is per person and Mansfield is per car. Windy Point is closer for me as well.

I only wish it were mine. With any luck one of them will be a project car someday. Engine size isn't as big a factor to me, but it would have to be a V8.

That's true so if you go solo it's $8 at Mansfield, $5 for Windy ($10 on weekends).

Well, if you're doing the weekly thing, just splurge and buy an annual, and you can get into all Travis County parks with it (additional 2 bucks for hippy hollow). I know there are several dive shops / groups in town that do weekly get togethers out there, and I'm considering joining one on Wednesday nights. Basically, I'll dive only on days that end in "-y".

Which dive club? Scubaland goes out there Wed night and Sunday afternoons, but sometimes it's not particularly organized and if you don't know someone or already have a buddy then you're sort of on your own. I'm sure once you become a regular it's cool. I go to the shop a lot and some of their larger, organized events, but I went once to a dive club event w/ my g/f and we couldn't even tell who was with the club and who wasn't so we just did our own thing and dove.

Just got back from Windy Point with Shaggie and Aggie Dad the diving was fun but the vis is still poor. I would definitly be into a regular Wednesday night thing if more were willing or even if just one was willing. I am leaving for Belize on Friday but will be back a week later.

danktex, I'm down for Wednesdays. I'm out of town next week, but let's plan on the week after. If somehow either of us forget, try to PM me on Monday or Tuesday of that week; I'll try to remember to do the same. I'll also try and talk my g/f into going as well. Anyone else is invited too, I'll bring some drinks, chips, etc if enough people come.

Thanks for the report danktex!

Well, I got a friend who dives with the old Pisces group on Wednesdays, AAS usually dives T/Th evenings, and I dive when I'm allowed. If nothing else, we'll have a SB group out there! :-)

Today was a list of first's for Danktex, AggieDad and Shaggie

Danktex, you need to change the number of dives
AggieDad - finally became an "official" Swamper instead of a wannabe
Shaggie - Well in involved an apparatus (out of Windy Point Park) and a dead fish.

this was my first dive of the year due to sinus problems and thankfully it went very well. Now if I can just get a mask that will quit leaking.

Lot's of fun guys,
If I am in town, put me down for Wednesday evenings.

I love diving Travis during the week. I have been there when there was no one but me and my buddy in the water.

Good news Dan, glad you enjoyed it. I wish I could have joined you.

Or you can really splurge and buy a year pass to WP for $150.

BrianV
June 8th, 2006, 11:23 AM
It's $5 / entry during the week so that gets you 30 visits before your year pass is up. I really would only be diving March - October and there's going to be a handful of weeks I won't go, so I don't know yet if $150 / year is a deal.

I've just relocated back to Austin from Dallas (I-35 is best driven southward), and looking forward to diving locally, so I'll keep an eye on this thread. Maybe it'll be as fruitful as the N. Texas clan who enjoy CSSP and Athens, and each others' company, so frequently. The disorganized dives (or when everybody else seems to know everybody else except for me) scare me a bit, as I don't have a regular buddy.

What ever happened to the Austin Scuba Club? I just checked their website, and there doesn't seem to have been a meeting for months. A while back there was a flurry of email activity around a happy hour, but that was the last I heard.

I'll try to remember to PM you when I start a new thread. I'm always down to buddy up with someone or if I'm already buddied, I have no problem doing a 3 group buddy system. I also would prefer to have a dive group that enjoys diving together and chatting about diving and other various topics. I've found a great dive club in California like that, but so far I haven't found a similar club to that in Austin.

I have an itch to dive right now so I'll be sure to post an open invitiation on scubaboard for the Wednesday after next.

Poor? I guess it's a comparative thing. Some places we must have had 8-10ft! This past winter we were diving in less than 5ft vis:shakehead

Hey Willie did you get the PM I sent you afew days ago about going with us?

Well I know the vis can be 20+' in Windy Point. The blonde girl that works at the entrance showed me a picture she took of the lake on a Wednesday morning and it was carribean blue, she said that was the clearest she's ever seen it, but still I was impressed.

This was early May by the way. If you dive mid-day Saturday or Sunday during the Summer, there are times where vis is no better than 5ft, so I'd take 10-15' and consider it great diving for Central Texas.

BrianV
June 8th, 2006, 05:36 PM
PS - The picture she showed me was of her standing on top of one of the stair cases looking down; you could see the stair case going down quite a ways and faintly see one of the dive platforms. At this time the lake was very low so the depth of the platforms was around 20', and about 16' for the rails that go around the platform.

I would be interested in when that picture was taken. So far in as many times as I've dove WP this year there was one time where the vis was around 20 ft. I'd have to look thru my log to check, but I think that was maybe march or april. So far, this hasn't been one of better springs for good visibility.

No, John, I didnt. I did bounce a few back and forth with AggieDad. I couldnt come because of out-of-town guests and getting ready for my trip.

I did two dives on Wed, 3-29-06, right around noon. Vis was amazing in a band from about 20-40' or so. I estimate as good as 25'. Not very good above that, quite murky, and below that it steadily deteriorated. It was early afternoon and the wind was calm, so light penetration was good to about 50'. When we dropped into that good vis I was amazed, without a doubt the best I have seen in a lake.

Ask the blonde lady that works the entrance to see if she has any pictures of the lake with great vis.
