Does a pony gauge have to be nitrox compatible?
What mechanism in there require it to be.... is it just the o-ring?

How "big" a pony are you talking? I found the one on my 13cuft to be pretty useless. Too small to read well and since I rig it upside down...and hang off the cam bands....cant see it while diving anyway.
Since I breath it once or twice before I enter...and once or twice at depth...I always top it off after a days diving and dont worry about a gauge.
