[A] Monroe County Sheriff's Department Detective said;

"It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole in a coral rock, effectively pinning the man to the bottom of the ocean," in a news release.

Arrest this fish.

Harrr! The death of the diver is certainly not funny, but the way folks describe things and the place they put motives and blame is sometimes just plain ridiculous, ain't it?

IIRC, there have been similar incidents next to oil rigs in the Gulf, where speared fish have wrapped lines around divers and the rigs. Don't know it the incidents were fatal, like this incident, though.

Poor judgement would be my guess.

Many are killed with a fishes' help on the rigs. Of course on the deeper rigs body recovery is iffy at best. I knew 2 who died out there, and know of several others that didn't ever come home. Any fish over about 30 pounds can easily kill a diver out there, and even 10 pounders are dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. The rigs are pretty much entanglement and obstruction central.

It's very easy to get into a position where you can't cut yourself free if you have gear tied to yourself. It's even easier to have a fish lash you to to something even if you have a free end to the rig.

FTThere ye go gettin' serious Fred... you're absolutely right of course. Last one I know of had no other obstacle involvement, just an AJ that wrapped the diver up and knocked his reg out with both arms pinned. Diver swam for the surface but forgot to exhale... Still, the implication that "fish kills diver" is bogus.

Because it was tacitly refered to this forum by a Moderator who said:

"Gentlemen,
this thread resides in the Accident & Analysis forum.
Jokes are not desired here."

I hadn't really thought of it as a joke but a comment on the article. The moderator apparently thinks its a joke, so I put it in the joke department.
