I went down to West Palm this past weekend with my 79 year old father (who I certified this past summer) and my 13 year old son (junior advanced open water with > 100 dives). It made for a great "guys weekend". We dove Blue Heron Blvd Bridge Friday and then the morning and afternoon charters with Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures Saturday. Sites included Flower Garden, Breakers, South Doubles, and Mid Reef. The seas were flat with a light current and pretty good viz in the morning with the current and seas picking up with falling viz in the afternoon. There was the usual myriad of marine life that included lots of eels and turtles. The forecast was for 8 foot seas Sunday so we headed home. Here are a couple of photos:

Brian:
The seahorse was along the westernmost pilings closest to the south side of the east span of the bridge. Does that make sense? Anyway, we saw FIVE seahorses in that area. There have been several seahorses in that area for the past several months. Maybe we can dive there together some time soon and I'll try to find them for you.

Hey Doug,
Have you seen the orange & black sea horse lately? We saw 5 sea horses on 10/1, and the last one was the orange & black one. Unfortunately, I was out of film. (I know... go digital... I hear it every time I run out of film).. we went back on 10/8, and we only found one sea horse, and the orange & black (long snout?) one was gone. I saved my film for it.

I envy you, Doug. I lost my dad to a brain tumor when he was only 50. He would have loved diving, I just know it.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I almost lost mine a couple of years ago. Surviving gave him a new lease on life and prompted him to learn to scuba dive. Here's a link to his story from the SSI website:

A full account with photos will be published in the upcoming Scuba News magazine.

I haven't seen the orange and black one for awhile either. He's either hiding better or the aquarium traders got him!

oh wow! Your dad is amazing! My dad is also amazing, but he is afraid of the deep end, so he will not be diving anytime in his future.

Wow! Great pictures and great story. My dad is 61 and I would love it if he also dived. My brother dives with me and it is great. I want to get my 13-yr-old son diving soon but right now he would prefer an Xbox 360. Oh well. Anyway, I've heard cool things about Blue Heron Bridge. I really enjoy diving where there is a variety of sealife.

Marco:
Thanks for the offer but I'm teaching an Advanced Nitrox class this weekend. So it's a cold and dark sinkhole with no marine life instead of your warm water and pretty fish. Oh well.
Have a great trip. Let me know if you can make the Hydro Atlantic and some other deep wrecks November 6-7.

My dad loved the ocean when he was alive. We would go to Panama City every year when I was younger, but he couldnt do alot of swimming because of an operation he had when he was in the military. He wouldve loved to see me dive, but I dont think he'd ever go himself.
Hey dad, i'm still enjoying the water! :)
