I dont know much about hand held sonar. But I work with single beam sonar, mutibeam sonar, side scan sonar, and sub-bottom profilers for oil and gas surveys and archaelogical survey work anywhere from nearshore to full ocean depth. Actually Im sitting on the boat in Brasil right now sureveying at 1200m with our Autonumous Underwater Vehicle which is equiped with Multibeam, sidescan sonar and subbottom.
