Anyone else seen the new Halcyon catalog for 2003? A couple new things that I saw were a redesigned Scout (no longer looks like a UK lighthead) and a semi-closed circuit lift bag (open bottom but with OPV) for wetsuit divers.

Okay, exposing my ignorance here, but why do wetsuit divers need a special lift bag?

You got any pics of the new goodies you can post from the catalog?

No drysuit hose is my guess. That way they can fill with a reg or exhaling bubbles into the bottom of it

They were responding to the need for wetsuit divers to be able to inflate without disconnecting the inflator hose from the wing. There was a longstanding debate about closed circuit lift bags and wetsuits..

Trust me to have just bought the old style bag (but seeing as I just got a drysuit, it's a moot point... although I bet the new one is easier to use regardless).

Not without a scanner...it is a paper catalog and I don't have a scanner at home. Maybe I can scan a couple in at work tomorrow and post them..

There were a couple times I forgot to reattach it and found out later when I was sinking...

Maybe I am really in the WKPP...or maybe I was on the Brittanic expedition!
Ok, from my LDS...but I liked the sound of the other choices much better!

I will scan a couple pictures when I get a break from the dreary Friday workday...
It looks like a different lighthead...it has an "H"- Halcyon logo on it and doesn't appear to be the same as the UK SL4/6 bulb/lighthead they were using before.
The new bag looks pretty sweet though...have to check one out one of these days..probably when it gets warm enough to wear my wetsuit again..

I know the quality stinks, but the "good" scanner is broken...

Again, bad scanner, but you get the idea...

So they have knurled it again. I wonder if the bulb and relfector are still UK? Bad if they are not, now only EE would have them. Wonder what the price will go up to as well.

It looks like they have changed the grip from the checkerboard stuff to either a knurling or diamond shape (like you mention). I think the biggest change is that weird "H" lighthead.. It will remain to be seen what the deal is with that and why they changed it.

Gee... It looks just like the one Dive Rite has been making for a number of years.

But, if you read the fine print (and I know the scanning job sucks) it says it has "Baffles along the open end to prevent tipping" and then "Baffled inflation chamber prevents accidental tipping in rough conditions".
We'll have to wait until somebody gets one to see if they are actually any different...

Hi
Am I understanding you guys correctly?.
I dive wet and I use a redundant system "two of everything". I can't imagine some one trying to add air to there wet suit to obtain lift. If trained correctly you will know that blowing a bag and doing your deco procedures adrift is the only option. Adding air to your wet suit is a dangerous game.

I think we misunderstood each other. The closed circuit Halcyon bags are not open bottom and have to be inflated with your LP hose from your inflator on your BC/wing. There was always an argument about how smart it was for wetsuit divers to be unhooking the inflator hose from their wings when they do not have a redundant buoyancy device. To "fix" that problem, Halcyon finally started making an open bottom lift bag so wetsuit divers don't have to do this anymore. There were open bottom bags from many other manufacturers (Carter, DiveRite, etc.) anyway, but Halcyon didn't make an open bottom version until now..
I agree with your assertions about adding air to a wetsuit for lift...pretty crazy. Although, I remember reading somewhere that Exley used to put air into his hood, make an air bubble, remove his reg, and then yell at people while underwater.

Eric I'm betting that they've just gone for a custom rubber head, using the same UK bulb reflector assembly. The body looks the same - they're just trying to get their logo on them :) I'm not about to rush out and replace my Canadian Extremes - the specs are still the same.
Anyone notice Darren has stopped flogging them on eBay? He's still got his website running though.

They may be ok for looking around in the bathtub for your ducky or the drain plug, but they can't be trusted on a "real" dive. In order to work properly, it must have an "H" on it..

Lucky for you O-ring, I've already spilt my coffee this morning. Really.

You are too funny...nice to see someone with a good sense of humor on the board these days... Besides, I have Canadian Extreme lights too!
I just scraped off the OMS on my gauges and pasted a UWatec sticker on there...You may want to do the same with your gauges...just scrape off the BAR and write PSI with a Sharpie.

You know, someone just had a bunch of Halcyon stickers up for sale on eBay but they're gone - you could have wrapped one around your lights.

The Dive Rite lift bag (50lb) has baffels on the inside to prevent loss of air at the surface when the bag lays over. I bought the DR Because it had an open bottom and the baffles. However, you do need to shorten the pull dump cord before using the bag. (I have found that this is typical with DR. They have good ideas but then add some screwy mods to the gear that you have to fix before using.)
It has always seemed to me to be a bad idea to be connecting and disconnecting any hoses when it is not needed.
