I'm curious. Having worked with GPS/GIS and marine mapping since the early 90's, how do these units work underwater (or are they designed to work topside under wet conditions).

I remember a university professor who wanted to use GPS to map our local dive park a few years ago. Her team carried a hand-held GPS unit in a period when selective availability was turned on (due to Iraq). They had us divers descend to the features they wanted to map and release a line to the surface where they'd take a reading.

Of course the combined error due to SA and due to current drift of the line probably created one heck of a "map." Funny she never showed us the result.
 
no, they're not meant to be used underwater

they're meant to go on boats, kayaks, beaches, etc., where they may get wet
