Trip/Dive insurance

I'm going overseas for a while and want to purchase insurance that provides for medical evacuation for NON-dive as well as dive accidents. It looks like DAN only covers dive incidents up to 10,000 (on preferred plan) and I see no provision for medi-vac. Can anyone suggest a alternative?

I just purchased the Travel Insurance from my bank (Bank of Montreal) as usual for my next trip in February (I live in Toronto Canada, traveling to Cozumel, Mexico). In the terms of the agreement that you sign and pay for (remember to have them stamp everything), you are covered for any dive accident as long as you have a basic certification or are in training with a certified instructor. Just make sure you read and understand the agreement, if it doesn't explicitly cover scuba diving, then look for insurance elsewhere.

Each insurance policy form at the bank includes a pamphlet that lets you know what is and isn't covered. Any time I travel, I get the medical and trip cancellation insurance (the trip cancellation insurance is added free when you buy a minimum of $100 of American Express travellers cheques at the same time). My total for 2 weeks was $56 Canadian.

Yes, your corection of my misinformation is apropos- I was wrong about the coverage with DAN. I've been reading some threads I found on here and carefully reviewing the policies for both Dive Assure and DAN and have concluded that I am going to purchase Dive Assure for trip/dive accident coverage. I will still have my DAN membership which allows me to support DAN's educational and other activities and allow me to access DAN's travel assist and emergency hotlines. My main concern has been that in an emergency in remote Irian Jaya or Sulawesi I am able to connect with competent, experienced help that can arrange medevac to the nearest chamber and medical facility without delay.

My wife is going to cover her UW housing and expensive SLR with DAN's provider as it covers water damage. I'm going to rely on DiveAssure for covering my gear.

Yeah the clause that requires they handle the evac is troublesome in that regard. Glad you got the info you needed.

We have the DiveAssure Platinum coverage. It seemed pretty comprehensive to me for international considerations. That's where I do and plan to do the bulk of my diving, and that's why I bought it. However, I didn't see that DAN coverage would have been lacking in any respect. They seemed comparable and competitive. I still joined DAN just to support them.

As a DAN member you can also purchase regular travel insurance through DAN, even if you decide that you don't want their dive insurance.

We've got our camera equipment and all our dive gear insured with DEPP. They were easy to deal with when a camera flooded last year. They covered the original purchase price and we got to pick the camera (from their "authorized dealers").

Also Divemaster Insurance may be an option (you'll have to Google that one yourself I'm afraid).
