My condo was broken into and all of my UW cameras were stolen. I reported this to the Boston Police and the officer asked if I had the serial #'s. I keep very good records of all my gear and the officer told me to post the equipment and report information in their online database- BPD homepage

Look for the guy with the bag "Wbesite looks to recover stolen property"
You can also register anything and this is a national database. I have attached a news story out of Canada in regards to this database

This is a great idea

wow thanks for the info. Hopefully never need it but nice to have....

Check your local pawn shops. Sometimes they take it to the closest one to your house. In my state if you find something in a pawn shop that has been stolen from you the pawnshop owner has to sell it to you for what they paid. It doesn't seem fair but it's better than not getting it back at all.

In VA the pawn shops submit a list of serial nos. to the Police Dept. and they are run to check for stolen. Pwn shops must obtain ID from the person who pawns an item. If recovered the pawn shop has to give up the item to the police who will eventually return it to the owner.
