Thats my predicament.

I want to be able to take advantage of local diving without freezing my ***** off. I have been using a 7 mm Farmer John with a 7 mm shorty hood gloves etc etc but think that a dry suit would get me diving more locally

I do not want to spend over $1000.00 for the suit so do you think it is better to get a cheaper new suit ie: Bare Nex Gen, Pinnacle Freedom or try and get a used suit either from divetank, ebay or somewhere else and try to go with a higher quality suit ie: dui

And I know that the $1000.00 now + the $2500.00 down the line is more expensive in the long run - but I really want to get a drysuit for a good price that will give me 25-30 dives per year for the next 5 years.

All my other diving will be in warm water with less protection.

I am still researching the differences but want to try and answer this question first

Thanks!

Russ

You don't hvae to go with used to keep under $1000. OS Systems has closeouts that start in the $650 price range. These are mis cuts, stained, closeout colors, etc that carry the full warranty.

Just a thought.

Ask your local OS dealer to call Shirley at the factory or just drop me a line and I can get you set up.

Give Richard at DiveTank.com a call. He can put you in a new drysuit with full warranty for your price tag.

FWIW, I picked up a used suit for dirt cheap, and I'm glad I did, because I got to dive dry for the past year in it. Now I'll be selling it shortly for only a little less then I paid for it, and putting the money towards a new suit. I'm better prepared to shop for the new suit, because I've been diving one long enough to know which features are important to me. And I'm in no hurry, because I already have a drysuit!

That said, my budget was considerably less than yours when I was looking for one, and I probably would have picked up a new one if I had $1k to put to it... even though the new one was also a "starter" suit. Still way cheaper than renting a $50 a weekend, if you do any decent amount of diving.

Amen! I got a used suit from a SB member and I'm glad I did. Like you said, I'll buy myself a new suit someday with the lessons I learned, and sell the old one for at worst a small loss.

A good undergarment (don't know how good the freebies are) will set you back some good money as well, so don't forget that. Up in your water, I'd want at LEAST 200G thermals with some long johns underneath and wool socks.

That being said, I just bought a used DUI CLX450 with DUI undies and Rockboots off eBay for just over $1200. I was very close to buying the USIA suit above.

That USIA suit is nice, but I have to admit to being pretty put off by the company selling it: they pictured a front entry suit for a back entry suit. In other words, they are NOT selling you the suit in the picture. Hmph. Buyer beware.
