Okay, what are the main things that degrade vis in Monterey? Is it hours of sun per day, causing green water? How long does reduced vis from rough conditions last, after smoother conditions return?

I'd rather pick my dive days a bit better than randomly. My girlfriend has just started cold water diving, and doesn't realize that what we had (20-25 feet) WAS good vis. I don't want to hear what she says when it drops below 10 feet. :shakehead Since Manta Ray stopped, there doesn't seem to be any on-line vis reports available.

When you figure it out let the rest of us know :)

.... I do know this...for the most part it opens up the deeper you get :D

PS Vis reports:
Multiple buddies on speed dial...

Not only do you have to worry about the vis problem, you can have to also worry about the currents because you're gonna be in both green water and spinning in the washing machine too.

Aquarius del Monte has a phone line.

First check the see conditions and make sure it's not rock and roll.

Bad vis comes from a number of sources:

- Nice sunny days.
- Big waves - it will settle down a bunch with just a day of flat water.
- Where the water's coming from
- Water temp
- What kind of mood old Neptune is in
- Some folks say low tides
- A random number generator
- How many jellyfish there are (the sea nettles eat the green, I'm told)

Frankly, there's not much you can do. Watch the dive reports here and on ba_diving,
and when the vis is bad, look for little stuff.
