Go over to yahoo group ba_diving, and search for "kayak." Sounds like a bit of bother for sure, but allows easy access to the better dive spots at Point Lobos, without a huge swim. Even Eric's and Aumentos are reasonable distances. I have an interest in kayak diving Monterey, but need to get my GF more cold water dives first.

I don't know how good the class is, but a potential link to training: http://www.asudoit.com/diving/scuba_kayak/scuba_kayak_details.html

I would totally kayak dive if I had a garage or yard to store the kayak and didn't have the scooter.
I've never dived off of one myself, but have tried freediving off of one when a buddy brought his.

If you're pretty serious about doing it, look at this website, and maybe even buy the book. (It's a bound-at-home type of job, but in my opinion well worth the $15.)

edit: just saw that skynscuba already posted the link above.

I recently purchased a kayak, just for scuba diving. I am just getting it dialed in. There is no reason you can not dive around Monterey off a kayak. It is a great way to get out past the kelp too, since it will slide over the top.

One of the main reasons I purchased a kayak, was because my boat diving experience in Monterey has been terrible. The Monterey Express last time, left me very discouraged (I think they tried to kill us!). Many of the places the dive boats go, a kayak could easily get to. For instance, in front of the aquarium, which is a nice dive spot. You will see all kinds of kayakers in rental setups out touring around, but not diving there.

I am looking forward to going to back to Lobos with my kayak. Last time we dove Bluefish cove, we had a great dive off my buddies Whaler. It would be no problem anchoring a kayak out there in 40 feet of water.
