How about the Gaskin? Its not too deep, p[retty easy.. nice night dive.. and you don't have to clear customs.. I've only done the Keysotrm once and bad weather.. I'm coming back this year for a second opinion. :)

How about the Gaskin?

The Gaskin is a great night dive I would agree.

Speaking of the Gaskin, I witnessed two weekends ago a group from Ottawa doing a Nav shore dive from infront of the Rowing Club to the Gaskin.

They had tried the same two weeks before that but didn't make it, so I guess they thought they'd try again. Two in the group were in wetsuits ( water temp 34F ) and when they got out, I figured one of them was on the verge of death. It is amazing what people will do.

I heard there is a wreck that is covered in oil (or some other sticky black substance) and that newbies with less than perfect bouancy control end up getting covered int the stuff...
Any idea which wreck it might be.. I'd like to find out more.
So far I've done the Gaskin, Lillie Parson, Kinghorn, and Keystorm... Can't wait to try some of the others.

That's pretty far from short.. considering the current... Why would anybody want to do that?! Especially in a wetsuit... Even in my DUI with nice warm weezle undoies I wouldn't want to make that swim...OK.. I admit it.. I am lazy and I don't like long surface or underwater swims just for the sake of swimming. Its only a means to an end.. (Like finding the wreck and exploring it).
I am still trying to figure out why some people get all excited about nav dives...Now navigating through a dark family room during a power outage to find the flashlight without stubbing your toe is a real skill :)

"I heard there is a wreck that is covered in oil (or some other sticky black substance) and that newbies with less than perfect bouancy control end up getting covered int the stuff..."

You are looking for the "America" a drilling or dredging? barge that flipped over in the shipping channel and is upside down with 2 or 3 support legs sticking up. The bottom is covered with thick black oil below the sediment layer. Lostsa tools onwhat used to be the topside. It is within view of a small castle? on a island off Mallorytown. Newbies may get back on the boat with oil on their fins and not know it....
The boat is tied up to a buoy outta the channel and you swim along the bottom and drop into the channel max depth around 70-80 feet.
BTW a charge went off under the hull and you can see the wrinkle in the hull

The Kinghorn before the Charter operators starting throwing anchors into her.

Close enough to swim to if you have the experience.

My favourite wreck in the river has to be the Jodrey, hands down. Think of it as the Keystorm on steroids.

I like the Keystorm for its size and varied depth ...but ... if I don't have to traverse the Island - I really like the Lilly because of the drift afterward.
I still haven't dove the Jodrey and would really like to.

I heard some amazing things about the Jodry.. Is she in recreational depths or for techies only?
At the moment I am only a lowly Nitorx AOW diver... Maybe someday I'll venture into the tech realm.. Just not ready for it yet.

Siund like a cool dive.. What's it like divig in the shipping channel with a freighter going overhead? Or do you only go when there is not ship traffic? I was on the Gaskin when a freighter passed nerby and that was pretty noticeable (And you could hear it very clearly).. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable right in the channel... What's it like?

The Jodrey is not a dive for an AOW diver (your tables won't go that deep....LOL)

Taz22 why did you not tell the guys about the line that runs out to the Gaskin?

The America should be treated as an overhead environment as you are in the shipping channel....A direct ascent to the surface is not an option with a freighter or a poker run going over you.

Lilly, Gaskin, Marsh, Keystorm Kingshorn, Davie, Daryaw, Comet and the list goes on.... I guess, it's the wreck I'm diving at the time. :D

Here's three threads I start a while back with some stats on dive sites (including wrecks) As I pulled the data off the Internet, some facts may be (say it ain't so) incorrect. The Jodrey is considered to be beyond normal the recreational range, and I "think" it's been closed by the USA Coast Guard.

Barb, "The Mason" is a barge and it is located to the south west of Mc Nair Island east of Brockville. Approx 600m fom the Gaskin but on the south side of the channel. You drift between McNair and it's sister island over the wreck. This would be a boat dive, no idea if/when it will be marked as of yet, the site was only made public a month ago.

Cheers.

If you like a fast drift dive you should try the upper Niagara River. The entry for the fastest part is upstream from the Peace Bridge.. Someone mentioned 10-12 knots :) I haven't done this one myself.. But I heard it faboulous.. Right after the Peace bridge is Thompson's hole.. the river deepens to 65 feet...and the current slack off a little (but not much). I've done this one as a night dive.. Its like riding a roller coaster in the dark. :) Bring a compas because there are back eddies that take you back upstream.. Its fun.. At least with a compass you can tell if you are going in the right direction. Wooohooo

Haven't seen many wrecks, but I really liked the Eastcliffe Hall.

Some info:

The wreck of the Eastcliffe Hall is located approximately 3/4 mile off Crysler Marina, in front of Upper Canada Village, and is only accessible by boat.
This 3335 ton and 343 ft steel freighter lies upright in approximately 70 ft depth. The deck is at about 40 ft depth and remains spectacular. The cargo holds offer protection from the current and are an easy penetration around the 50 ft mark.
At 4 a.m. on July 14th, 1970, with a cargo of "pig iron", the Eastcliffe Hall struck a shoal and sank within minutes with 9 loss and 12 survivors recovered from the masts and hatch covers that
saved them. Life boats were not able to be lowered due to the list and quickness of the sinking vessel. Capt Albert Groulx and his 16 year old son were among the lost crew.

The forward superstructure (upstream) has been dynamited back into the forward hold to clear the site as a navigational hazard. Though the surface current is quick, it becomes less on the wreck deck and the open holds provide additional shielding from the current. Normally, visibility is good and with your visit to the holds you will see the pilothouse, masts, living quarters as well as iron ingots that remain from the original cargo.

To observe this wreck, we recommend a lamp because several parts are hidden from natural light. A strong current makes the descent a little difficult, but once on the site, it is comfortable. Precautions need to be taken because several metal pieces are lying around since the blasting.

The seaway being close, merchant ships and pleasure boats create heavy traffic near the wreck.

Like all the other wrecks in Ontario, the Eastcliff Hall is a property of the province, and it is strictly forbidden to remove any object.

One of the top ten dives in the St-Lawrence River.

Something for everyone. Little current, great viz, Newbie-Teck, fish and a Castle with Guys that carry guns for the kids!

A Nav dive to the Gaskin sounds like fun but in a drysuit packing extra gas....

Taz: I've done the drift dive below the Peace Bridge from Ivy Lea Camp grounds and you can get deep and moving fast in a hurry. The eddys will bring you almost all the way back to your entry point but that would be a little too exciting a night dive for me...going in circles in the dark I reserve for above water sports.

I do hope that it will be marked, better to be marked then having everyone dopping anchors and damaging it. Whether it will be marked is another story. I understand that SOS got funding for another 50 marks, I'll have to get to the next 1000 Island SOS chapter meeting to see what is up.

In regards to condition, I hear it is in good condition, since it is close to the Muskie, you'll find that water conditions will probably be the same except for the current. As more info becomes known, I'll certainly post for the benefit of every fellow dive on this board.

I might even take my own boat out for a tour of it, since I grew up here and know the river ( been here most of my life ). Will just have to make sure that I anchor properly.

Ok I'll book you a spot, there's room for the driver ( and gear )and 4 passengers and gear so we need 3 more!!

BTW, my boat is a 23ft Baja with a 454 Merc sterndrive, it can easily do 60 mph, so after the Mason we can take a quick trip to the Keystorm or failing that the Dayraw is a stones throw from my cottage so we could do a nice shore dive.

You ar correct.. Its the same river that goes over the Falls.. You can go and dive the upper river (above the falls) or the lower river (below the falls). They are all drift dives and range from mild to wild.. I had one so slow I ended up kicking most of the way... Its several miles upstream form the Falls... So there is no way you cold accidentally get that far. Even with double tanks and stage bottles you'd run out of air before you get even close :)

I qould have to say the Daryaw is my favourate wreck so far. There is a nice rippin current to make you work, and you can get inside the sucker and she'll give you a run for your money while penitrating her. The Keystrorm is nice, but You can easily bored with her after about 4 dives, but she is still one of those must do wrecks when I get there.

So I say the Daryaw and the Keystorm, two very nice steel vessels with different orientations to make the dive a bit more challenging.

Please remember people, dive within the limits of your train and experience.

For us, it's the drift off the Lily, hands down.

If you can find an experienced charter operator who can chase, we backroll into the current just up from the island and descend either down the chain, or directly onto the Lily ... check air 'n get ourselves together on the bow, then go down to 120 ffw immediately to get through the two 80 foot eddies right above the bow (they'll just waste yer air finning through them), then multi-level up.

When the current's up, it can rip, although the current's been down over the last three years. Last year was better though, more like it was 5 years ago.

sparky30
January 8th, 2003, 08:18 PM
Sounds like a neat way to dive the Lilly.. I've only ever dove her with a short entry.. going down the chain.. Drifted off and up and back in the leeward side of the island..
I would have liked to go deep like you , but out dive master told us horror stories of ripping down currents, deep (beyond 130ft) floors and sea monsters.. You get the idea.. So we all stayed nicely together on the Lilly.,,
I like a fast drift dive.. we usually hit the upper Niagara River just around the Peace Bridge.. current can be 8 knots and up.. Its really moving :) Woohoo... Depth can go down to 65ft in one spoot, but most of it is really shallow.. I did that dive as a night dive and the old cars and shopping carts really come up fast out of the darkness :) Its a riot..

The answer could be that we have more Rec than Tech divers posting on this thread.

BTW, I understand that SOS will be placing a bouy on the J.B. King this year. As a side note, I had a great-cousin killed on the King when it blew up, I found out about this over the Christmas holidays.

I'm shocked no one (so far as i noticed) said the Vicory, realy the jewel of the river. and not even a mention of the J.B King or the Oconto. Curious.
The AE Vickery is very nice but she is getting kind of full of zebra muscles but I make sure I dive on her a couple of times a year anyways. The King is awesome in that the stuff is all over the place.

The answer could be that we have more Rec than Tech divers posting on this thread.

Why would they put a buoy on the wreck? There is a memorial block on the island and a line. If they put a buoy will it not be in the shipping channel?

Even though it might not make sense, I'm just telling you what I have heard.

I will ask if they are putting one in on the King....I can think of a few wrecks that should get a buoy first.

I see every one starting to talk about the Mason. I was on it in late September, nothing but a pile of boards. If you want to see a great new wreck near cross over island as to be taken to
the wreck between cross over and chippewa point. Steel barge, twim brass props, three cargo holds, in 125' of water, south side of shipping channel, so far no name or history given to the site. Found late August by local drift divers.

The king is the best dive in the river. The wreck is not that interesting but getting down to it when the current is ripp'in is the bomb, Horizontal rock climbing!! Can't get enough of the wreck!! a line from surface would wreck this dive.
