View Full Version : Any wrecks off of Okinawa?
Ooki-Buru December 22nd, 2002, 09:48 PM Where are there any wrecks off the coast of Oki? Are there any at all? -Ooki Padipro December 23rd, 2002, 01:55 AM Hay Oki, I was certified in Okinawa way back in 1986, and dove there for the about 3 years. I don't remember any wrecks around the island though. Lots to look at from WWII though. We used to dive off Bolo Point near the base of the cliff near the light house and you would see all kinds of bomb craters and we even found an old clip of anti aircraft shells laying on the bottom. We didn't mess with them of course but it was cool to see something like that. I found a couple of web sites on Okinawa diving a while back. I don't have the links here with me at work but I can try to post them tomorrow when I get home. Have fun, Scott Rickg December 23rd, 2002, 12:18 PM Oki, Here are 2 Okinawa websites: www.fathoms.net This is an English website for dive shop run by a former Marine and caters to U.S. personnel (but also has Japanese customers). I dove with him on 2 boat dive trips earlier this year when I was out there on travel. Had a great time and the price was right for Japan also. 8,000yen for a 2 tank boat dive to the Keramas Islands. The website also discusses a wreck they dive on named the USS Emmons (a WWII destroyer escort). www.okinawascuba.com This is also a good English website with a lot of general diving info about Okinawa. Hope this is of some help. Rickg sunfish December 23rd, 2002, 12:37 PM "Amami" a 51 meter vessel sunk off Yoron Island (about 28 km off the northern tip of the main island of Okinawa). Great spot for fishwatching. Don't expect to bag any loot, though. "Kanokawa" in Iriomote Island (2nd largest island in Okinawa). Not so much a wreck as the remainder of a wreck... Those two are the only ones I know of that are available to recreational divers. Technical people might know better. Have fun! xanyas December 25th, 2002, 09:08 AM There is a fairly new WWII US ship wreck off the the coast of Okinawa called the USS EMMONS. Contact Fathoms dive shop who is probably one of the only shops that go to this site... AliKat December 26th, 2002, 11:48 PM The USS Emmons is the only wreck that I know of around here. Fathoms does regular trips out there, if you want to pay the price. DiverBuoy December 26th, 2002, 11:51 PM I found this site and it doesn't seem to agree with the information already posted ... guess it just proves how careful you have to be with information from websites: Okinawa's only known wreck (http://japanupdate.com/previous/01/03/01/story13.shtml) Rickg December 26th, 2002, 11:56 PM Rich Ruth, the writer of this article is also the owner of Fathoms dive shop.
