Okay this may sound odd but I have found that the hose protectors that came with my old Maximus (circa '94) to be great. I have managed to find a few more over the years but not recently. Most of the after market hose protectors seem to have ugly colors or fit sloppily on hoses and just slide off.
As such, I am wondering if is possible to get some of these? The ones I have are about 4" long and made of a soft rubber. Here is a picture of what I am after:
