Sunday, a group of us went out with Avid Diver Charters (www.aviddivercharters.com) for a technical trip to the Hydro Atlantic. For those of you who have not been on this wreck, it is a true shipwreck having sunk in 1987 while being towed to Brownsville, Texas. Instead, it sank off Pompano Beach, Florida in 172 fsw. She is 320 feet long and still has a huge crane on the deck and the engine in the engine room. Twenty years of coral growth has turned it into a really beautiful artificial reef.
While the seas were a little bumpy (3-5 foot), we had great viz, no current, and warm water (79 degrees). We had three open circuit divers on doubles and the other three of us were on Sport Kiss rebreathers. We all had 25-30 minute bottom times with run times of a little over an hour.
Here are a few photos from the trip:
Scott amidships
Justin in the wheelhouse
Jeff (Scubaboard Kiss CCR moderator, Advanced Diver Magazine Chief Photographer, and great cook, by the way!)
Trumpet fish near the bow
