What do you guys think? I am looking at a Oceanic "package deal" from my LDS.
Looking over at the Oceanic forums (here) I see alot of problem posts, especially repeat problems.

I don't know what your "package deal" is, but fwiw, I use a veo 180 bungied on my wrist. I use it in computer mode on shallow dives and gauge mode for the deep stuff with no problems. Actually, it did crap out on me (not while diving though) and Oceanic sent me a new one at no charge. YMMV

"death" of the computer is the most common complaint
Most of them are replaced, but many worry about the computer dying during a dive and the inconvienance in general

I've been using Oceanic computers from day one. I've never had a problem. Currently I have a VT Pro with transmitter, a VEO 250 Navcon and am buying a VT 3 today to upgrade my wife from the VEO 250.
Do not worry about the "death" of the computers. I've never had it happen, I've never seen it happen, and I am not aware of any widespread problems like that.
You should be very happy if you decide to go with an Oceanic Computer. If anything goes wrong, they will stand behind their products.

I have 150 dives on my Oceanic computers, plus pool sessions, and I've had one failure.
I have a ProPlus2 (70 dives), an Atom2 (100 dives), and a Datamask. The datamask failed on the second dive, but we figured out it was defective from the factory. My LDS immediately exchanged it for a new one, and it has worked perfectly.
All computers are going to die. It's a fact of life. Take care of them, get them serviced, change the batteries.....they'll be great.
My instructor had to get his PP2 serviced this Fall. He has over 2000 dives on it and it has never had a problem. He never rinses his gear, he just throws it in the back of his truck, he doesn't bother putting the comp in a case or anything....... he's like the Samsonite gorilla of dive gear. He had his PP2 serviced because the tank pressure remaining was out of spec.

My family has a few Oceanic/Aeris computers and other gear as well. My son's Atom began reading sea level as around 2000' elevation. We sent it in under warranty and they shipped out a new one within about a week. When I called about that computer, I mentioned that my Elite was consistently a few degrees high on its temperature reading and the person I was speaking to asked me to send it in and they would completely recalibrate it and check it out at no charge, and then asked me if I was aware there had been a recall on a couple of regs, to be sure we were up to date there.
None of our computers has failed or malfunctioned, other than as I described above. When I have called their customer service department with questions on a couple of occasions, I have always gotten a human, never had to wait more than a few minutes, and the people I have spoken to have always been helpful.
I don't know how this compares to any other brand, but I would buy another Oceanic/Aeris computer without hesitation. Any piece of gear can fail, including an spg or watch.

The only Oceanic computer I didn't like was the bottom timer that they came out with back in the '80s. It was sealed so you couldn't change out the battery. I sent it in and I ended up with a brand new DataMax Sport. I've been diving it ever since.
Oh, I also have a Sherwood (made by Oceanic) Profile that was reading a 1:45 dive at 65' during my last trip to Catalina. My DataMax that I use as a backup was reading correctely with a :35 dive to 63'. It's really hard to get a dive longer than :45 on an aluminum 80.
Otherwise I love my Oceanic. Simple to read.

I don't think Oceanic computers or any other gear they sell, has a higher fail rate than any other brand,I think it's even way less then others.
Best of all,if they DO fail you,Oceanics service is on top of my list.
Sometimes when YOU screw up BIGTIME they still replace.
Go for it,you'll love them.

I had a Veo and the computer worked fine. What was extrememly buggy and unreliable was the dive log software and USB transfer cable. Oceanic worked with us (two folks in our area had similar problems), but after the third software reinstall and re-entering data my LDS gave me a full credit towards a different brand that has performed flawlesly.
This was two or so years ago, so Oceanic may have resolved the software and interface issues.

To me, It’s more about customer service than anything else, given it is a reasonably quality product. Oceanic has a proven track record with rock solid customer service. Add to that, they regularly post answers to questions here. That demonstrates to me they are serious about taking care of their customers. I have two PP2’s and have 50+ dives since last year, zero problems.

I bought a PP2 and on the 2nd dive with it, it died. Took it back to my LDS, got a replacement and 80 dives later it is still working great! As with any piece of new equipment, keep the receipt, warranty and send in the registration.

I recommend against this computer. I bought a new Oceanic Pro Plus in June 2007 and the computer flooded after 6 dives. So the dive shop replaced it no problem...I dove with it for 30 dives and then today it broke. It would not register any air pressure today. I took it to an Oceanic dealer and they said the transducer went bad. So, now I need to get another new one.
I really do like the computer...when it works. The reliability????You make your own judgement.

I have had a VT3 for about a year. No problems whatsoever, no issues with linking. I like it and would buy one again. I don't find the software great, though (not really user friendly) but I think it is improving with each update.

Atom 1.0, Atom 2.0, and of course my ancient yet reliable Prodigy. I dont really think there is any problem with Oceanic computers. There is just a hell of a lot of them out there and of course any time some one has a problem they want to b***h and moan as much as possible because they are upset.
