I believe that in some competitions, the pro rating is for anyone who has had 3-4 photos published in the past year....Others may claim you are a pro if you make your living from this...I don't care as long as my wife thinks the pictures are worth the money I spend, as my gear/diving tends to cost as much as what the "pros" apparently spend...

My definition of pro xxxx would be "one who makes their living from income generated by xxxx". If it is just supplementary income I might call it "semi-pro photography". Then there is the wide spectrum of hobbyist's, from obsessive to pathetic! :dork2:

I have a few in there too. I guess it all depends on whether you want to be a pro or you don't want to be a pro. There are advantages/disadvantages to both. I think you can be considered a professional photographer even if you have never had any income from photography. For example, assume an amateur underwater photographer decides to write a book on some specialized area of photography, say, sharks, or photos from a particular part of the world. I believe the costs involved (equipment, travel, materials, etc.) could be considered business expenses and the photographer would be considered a professional. But I might be wrong, ++Ken++

Being published means you have professional capabilities. To be a "working professional" you must make most of your living from photography.

Some of my pictures are now part of the 4th edition Reef Fish Identification DVD. I traded my pictures for products. Does that take away my amateur status (I know my pictures are still amateur quality :D)? What makes a Pro a Pro?

Woooo whooooo!!!! Contrats Bill!!!

(I've always thought you took much better pics than I did anyway, even when we were on the same dive in the same conditions!).

Can you post the pics that you took that made it to the DVD?

(hopefully it wasn't the 'crab porn' :rofl3:)

I like that idea of being a pro if you want to be. That means I can have a reputation yet still enter amateur contests for fun. I'll have to keep a close eye on rules if I compete in any contests in the future. I never win those things anyway :D.

What happens if you are both obsessed and pathetic about this hobby?
