I'm currently in NZ for a year and am having trouble calculating my caloric intake each day since all their products are labelled in kj. I figure that means kilojoules, but the math doesn't add up when I put the numbers into online calculators.

Example: An energy drink on my desk right now.

488kj (if meaning "kilojoules") translates to 116,556 calories. Hmmm. That's the equivelant of about 50 cakes.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

How many kilojoules in 1 calorie [nutritional]? The answer is 4.1868.

Multiply kJ by 0.2388 to get Calories (nutritional not heat)

Roughly, divide the kJ in halves and then halves again to get a ballpark number.

477kJ = 114 CAL.

The Calorie (butritional) is actually a kilocalorie. So, if you divided your result by 1000, you'd be at the proper answer.

Cheers!
