hi
I (US man 47yo) have been lucky to have dove in only 5 places in the world, Great barrier, Thialand, Costa Rica, Caymens and Belize, total maybe 75 dives, all OW cert, so I am bit spoiled. Im now married to a Russian woman and they have charters flights to Sharm for 10 days in late April (also other times in the year), staying a various hotels, all inclusive or just breakfast. My wife would be flying from Rostov Russia and I would use my 75k United FF miles from Wash DC to Frankfort to Cario, then have to pay for a cheap flight to Sharm to meet up with her. She could take the flight only and not do the inclusive hotel deal but they would charge her $200+ more if we don't get the hotel deal.
In my travels the liveaboards I have been on were much better diving than day trips. Does sharm have 1 night liveaboards??

I am most interested in seeing hammerhead sharks etc and fish I never seen before. I perfer warm clear water, so I am not tied to this month, I could always go another month another year if late summer is better diving?? What dive site can u see these sharks? Can this be done during a day trip?

Has any american done these all inclusives? Are they worth it, or does the food get boring? I could always just book the Sharm Waterfalls hotel Hilton for $100 per night and we buy all are own food at restuarants, anyone stya here before??

Anyone recommed a bus trip from say Cario to Sharm and see the pirameds along the way, or can this only be done from a regular tour??

I would like to do a minimum 10 dives over say 3 days. My wife has neve dove, but would likely snorkel. I know the russians have bad reps as far as egypt, so my preferance is to avoid the groups as much as possible, tho my wife is very social and some exposure may be good as its would be inevitable.
thanks for your time
Pete

Pete,

You would be very lucky to see sharks around Sharm. During the dozens of dives I made there I've seen two or three reefsharks and one leopard shark. There is however the dive on the backside of one of the reefs in the straits of Tiran where sometimes hammerheads are spotted in the deep. Not on my dives though :(

All dive sites around Sharm can be reached by day boat. Indeed, this is the usual way to dive the local sites, Ras Mohammed, or Tiran. Of course liveaboards operate here too (though I've never heard of a one-night liveaboard). Being on a liveaboard insures you are the first to dive a site in the morning, thus avoiding the crowding that follows the arrival of the day boats. Day boats offer two dives a day, liveaboards three or four.

Can't help with the hotels, I always stay in the cheapest places since I'm out on (or in) the water in the daytime, out on the town at night

The best diving within day boat reach of Sharm is Tiran, without question. Honking currents and sometimes tricky entries & exits, but great diving. Ras Mohammed used to be good, but I'm not sure if it's over-dived these days. A day trip to Dahab and some shore dives there is also strongly recommended.

Your best way by far to get there from the US NE is to fly to London and get on a charter flight direct to Sharm. Make sure they use the same London airport. It's cheaper, much quicker, and you won't have the baggage restrictions you always get on scheduled flights. Several charter operators, such as Explorers The Diving Holiday Specialists | Red Sea Diving | Red Sea Holidays.

Pete,
I also recommend the strait of Tiran by daily boats. I never heard of Liveraboard for one day. Also if you can make a one day tripe to Dahab, you can visit canyon and Bells-Blue hole. These dives I like the most. Dahab is 110 Km (68.5 miles) from Sharm El Shiekh, in my opinion it worth it. Late April is the best time of the year in Egypt according to the weather. If you are truely lucky you can spot a shark or two, but if you want to see more sharks either in mid summer or you can go to the south of the Red Sea (Egypt). Like Marsa Alam, Brothers Island, Elephant stone. You can se varies kinds of sharks and schools of Hammerheads.

Have a nice visit, enjoy your time and dive safe

Hi. I am an American, living in Kuwait. I love going to Sharm. It is a favorite of mine. You will probably end up at the Gardenia, if it is the Russian all-inclusive deal. That's the usual spot. Definitely crap. But it is a cheap ride. Early summer is the best time for shark and pelagic activity. June to August. It is also hot. I mean Hot. Stay wet and you'll be fine. The nights cool off well. If you don't do the hotel, a live aboard is sweet. There are plenty out of Sharm. Does your wife dive? If not, she will get bored on board while you are diving. At teh hotel, she will at least have others to hang out with, shopping, the beach.
Yes, Russians have a really bad reputation there. Divers tear up teh reefs, if allowed, the people can be extremely rude, and many of the women dress like hookers without meaning it. In teh conservative Muslim culture, that is frowned up. But there are also many nice Russian families and groups who help balance it a bit. Just don't let anything get you down and be polite. People here in the Middle East, and I mean Arabs, are generally very generous and polite. I have been here 4 years and not had one bad experience. Don't mistake non-understanding with rudeness. Oh, and both Arabs and Russians have no manners about getting in lines or personal space, whatsoever. It's not personal. just the way they are.
So, go online and check out the Red Sea or Sharm live aboards. Also, Ocean College Divers are fantastic. If you stay on land Not in the Gardenia(it is worth it Not to stay there), stay at teh Camel divers Hotel in Naama Bay. The dive group is on the money for service and class too. Check out a package deal with them. Good luck.

The great pyramids are to the west, the Red Sea is the east. You can take a bus from Cairo to Sharm but it is a long ride. You do get to see the Suez Canal a long the way. As for Pyramids depending on the approach you might see them from the air. Which was my first view. Otherwise it is a day trip from Cairo. No guide is needed unless you want a camel ride.
