Goblin Shark????????

Has anyone ever seen a Goblin Shark(Mitsukurina owstoni) actually swimming in the water? I know that a few of them have been trawled up from as deep as 4000ft and they are thought to be mainly bottom dwellers, but I was wondering if any of them have ever been seen in the water or maybe even caught on film by a deep submersible or something? I have a great interest in sharks and the Goblin shark seems to be one of the more mysterious ones out there and it is hard to find anything other than basic information on it.

I've seen this before, recently when I took out some clients for dinner, they ordered the catch of the day and it turned out to be shark............ sure
enough, before long I seen them

The answer to your question is "yes" and "no". Yes, they caught one back in the 70's that survived in a tank for 48h, and no - none has been caught on film from a minisub. So far...

How about posting some of your knowldedge to the Board? This thread is the first time I have ever heard of a goblin shark, and I would be interested in more details. Care to share?

Ok, first of all I'm a 29 year old marine biologist from Sweden. I choose this profession since I've always loved sharks! It has only been during the last year that I've actually had the possibilty to work with sharks - and get paid to do it!

Since my second passion is the deep sea and I've always liked unusual looks (old punk rocker as I am), I've focused more on goblin sharks during the last years. You can say that I conduct some kind of hobby research on them. I collect photos, scientific papers, figurines etc

Well, I am glad to find out that they tend to stay a bit deeper. Because I would hate to see that ugly thing up close, LOL.

I'm sure it's mother loves it though...
