This is something that I have been wondering about.
So I'm posting a poll.
DivingGal please don't slap me!!
We here in Ontario have our own little spot on the board
OFWF.
But what about the rest of our Canadian Divers?
Here's the poll
Go from OFWF to "Crazy Coldwater Canucks"

I'd never slap you -- unless of course your SO tells me it's OK.

Sorry dude, I'm still liking the name of OFWF.... all other Canucks have free membership (.... like anyone pays to join)

As used here, is considered derogatory. Is it not seen that way up there?

Back in the early 80's {I think is was the 80's} we had a down hill ski team that kicked butt. and they were dubed "The Crazy Canucks" and it became a source of pride to be called a Crazy Canuck, at least around here.
Some other Canuck's may think it's derogatory, I don't know.
And not CanuckDiver :D

Being the newbe here I'd just like to say that I was delighted to find this OFWF group. It will allow me to quickly meet local and nearby divers and will aid me in learning my way around to some good dive sites. This would also be the best place for me to come and get answers to any questions that I may have...Local shops, courses, finding dive buddies and dive sites etc... I think that a Generic "Canadian" title might result in the site getting too large with a lot of NOISE that might not be very benificial to anyone. My first impression of OFWF is very good, everyone seems to know each other and it has a friendly atmosphere with a little bit of good natured fun in there too... For me, it's fine, just the way it is. You all should be proud of what you've created here.

Don't worry about calling us Canucks wreckwriter!

We like the name. Check its origin in Dude's post. Translated into American, "Canuck" means 'Canadian World Champions'.

Besides we got some equally off beat names for yous guys from SoFlo and SoCal.

In Texas which is filled with Canadian nurses and Mexican service workers there is a somewhat derogatory although I must say pretty funny takeoff on the clearly derogatory 'wetback'.

What do some Texans call us Canadians, but 'snowbacks' !

Oh well I think we have pretty thick skins. Must say I laughed when I heard that one :D

WW - it's also the name of the Vancouver NHL team (as opposed to the Montreal one, where Canadians/Canadiens is commonly pronounced "Habs") It's about as derogatory as "Hoosier" or "Buckeye" (and possibly less).

As for the OFWF - even when you don't consider the distances involved, how much does diving in Ontario resemble diving in say, the Pacific NW or in the Maritimes/Nfld regions? Probably not much. Might make more sense for the Canucks in the Atlantic region to hook up with the New Englanders and perhaps the PNWers in Oregon, Washington, B.C. and Alaska could form another NDI club. It's not about national boundaries, after all, right? How many Americans from the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway zones think of themselves as Fellow Freaks?

Just my $0.02 - it's not like I'm still living in Ontario right now - but when I come back there to dive again, I'm definitely a Freak. ;)

Addendum: The Crazy Canucks were late 70's to early 80's and a lot of them are still skiing (and the ones I've met are still crazy!).

Never tell you to shut up...........I think the "Freaks" is ok.....We are open to taking honary members.....basically anyone who can come up with the US$100.00 fee....(Payable to Butch's RRSP fund) ;) ............

I have to agree with Cat, we in Ontario have different dive conditions than those in the PNW and the Atlantic, and of course the praries.

WW the term canuck as previously explained is worn with a great sense of pride.

With this in mind ...do you folks down south find the term "Yanks"...derogitory?.....Maybe just the folks south of the Mason-Dixon?.......

Thanks for your concern and interest..... :)

I've always heard "canuck" used as a slur. I did know there was a team using it though.

Having spent five years in Michigans great north of the Upper Peninsula, spent a lot of time around Canadians.

Most of them i knew took "canuck" as a term of endearment. They liked it. Kinda like calling people who live in the UP yoopers.

Yoopers call us people below the Mackinaw bridge, trolls. That started way before computers were invented by the way.

Maybe we could have a spot for the rest of Canadians.
I like the name Crazy Coldwater Canuck's.

Typical Yank opinion, no knowledge of anything that is happening outside US borders. Unless,of course, it concerns oil. ;) ;)

I'll have you know my first wife was from London, as in Ontario. I think Canada is among the nicest places I've ever been (too bad its so damn cold in winter).

Hi Everyone,

It has been brought to my attention that some of you think this poll has been messed with, but I just viewed the activity in the admin logs and no one has "adjusted" the poll.

Ya gotta remember that if you give people a chance to give a smart-assed remark, they are going to be a smart-ass. Reguardless of how they really feel.

Oh, and BTW, Shut Up, Jim!

hehe

At least cared enough to read it :D

Damm LD, you sound like my wife :tease:
