Went out for a couple dives on 3/21. Second dive we went to Snapper Ledges. We were the second boat on this site. Splashed in along with my daughter, got to the bottom and tried swimming towards the ledge. We kicked as hard as we could and it was all we could do to stay in one place. We couldnt move anywhere. Couldnt even get to the front of the boat. After kicking in place for a couple minutes we finally thumbed the dive. Most of our group had already gone up. Fortunately they threw out an extra long tag line to grab onto.
I don't think I've ever been in current that strong (other than a planned drift dive).
Kinda sucked driving down to the keys from Orlando and and getting lousy dives, but such is the nature of the sea...
Back in Ohio now and 34 degrees outside, so I guess all things are relative....

I'm sorry your dives didn't turn out so good.

Did the captain advise the group on the conditions or offer to look for an alternative dive site with less current??

I dont think the captain realized how strong the current was - if he did he sure didnt say so. I dont think he would have had us get in the water in that case. There were a couple divers with an instructor - I think finishing checkout dives, me and my daughter, and a couple lobster guys. The lobster guys were last up - they mentioned something about crawling along the bottom.
Captain said something about the current going the opposite direction it normally runs.
They were talking about going out in the afternoon and drift diving if there was still a current, but we decided to give up for the day..
