I've been exploring the possibility of switching to a BP/W from my Seaquest Balance. A dive buddy brought his Transpac II (which he no longer uses) over for me to try. It has a plastic two strap STA mounted over a rec wing. I haven't dove it yet but it seems a plate would make the tank more stable. Does the Transpac II accept a Dive Rite or other plate like the Apeks WTX harness? Would adding a plate to the Transpac add the to stability of the tank? Thanks for your thoughts.

A transPac will not accept a backplate. It is designed to work as a soft pack. If you are using one for diving a single tank then you should not need the STA. There are slots on the back of the pack for the cam bands to slip through and then through the openings in the center panel of the wings. If you switch between singles and doubles often then the STA makes the switch quicker: no rethreading of the bands, just undo the screws. If you are looking for something with the comfort features of the TransPac such as the padded shoulder straps that uses a plate then the closest would be the TransPlate.

Here is a link to the manual for the TransPac showing how the cam bands attach to the pack: http://www.diverite.com/downloads/diverite_20.pdf
