Oceanic Datamax pro plus battery - Tadiran 5151 or Tadiran 2150

Does anyone know if I can use a Tadiran 5151 battery instead of the recomended Tadiran 2150 battery for the Oceanic Datamax pro plus????

I purchased a Tadiran 2150 through the mail and when it came it was a Tadiran 5151. Same specs on the outside of the battery. Is it really the same?

No, they are quite different batteries as far as a dive computer is concerned.

If you were using it for the realtime clock in a personal computer, either battery would work. It may not work with your dive computer, though, because dive computers draw short pulses of higher current when measuring depth about once per second.

While I don't have a Datamax Pro Plus, I do have a Oceanic Data Plus 2 non-AI hockey puck that uses a 1/2 AA lithium battery. The manual calls for a TL-2150 or a TL-5902, or a SAFT LS14250. I know from direct experience that the seemingly equivalent TL-5101 does NOT work. Even a brand new fresh TL-5101 would either not work at all, or would show low battery warning --- this is because the battery voltage would fall too much during the high current pulses the Data Plus 2 draws when firing up the depth sensor once per second.

In review the differences in the spec sheets, I'm pretty sure that it is a case of some Tadiran batteries (2150 and 5902 for example)being spec'd for high current pulse usage while others (5101 and 5150 for example) are not spec'd or suitable for high pulse current usage.

The TL-2150 model is being phased out and replaced by the TLL-5902, which is also rated for pulsed operation. (Note the extra "L" in the TLL-5902 --- it is different than the older TL-5902)

thanks for the help. i usually replace my battery every spring so I will use my old battery till I get the new 2150. There should be plenty of juice left, but there is no way tell in the dive computer.
