What is the most worthless piece of equipment an LDS has tried to sell or sold to you.
When I first got certified they tried to sell me my gear and wanted to sell me a $40 or $50 snorkle. Luckly I have friends that have dived for years and they set me straight on what to spend my money on and a $40 snorkle is not one of them.
Also paddle fins instead of splits since Apollo were the only ones making them at the time and they didn't carry them.

The snorkel my oldest daughter decided she wanted was one of those dry things that the LDS was at that time charging 80 bucks for, and, of course, I bought it. Every time I go there to get a tank filled, they try to sell me an accessory for the tank, like a boot or a wrap thing, neither of which I want or need.
A buddy of mine is thinking of taking up scuba, and my advice to him is that he can borrow a snorkel. He'll eventually find one somebody's lost at the bottom of the lake, and that's the snorkel he wants.

There's a funny thing about diving DIR or Hogarthian set equipment. I purchased all of my Halcyon gear from my LDS, and they know that there is nothing else that they can sell me! I won't be buying an AIR2, snorkel keepers, retractors, consoles, or most other doo-dads that they stock.
When I do purchase new stuff (new lights, etc), they know that they'll be the place that I come to because their service is great.

I bought a reel once that was really bad. It jammed (got tangled in the axle) every time I used it. I ended up removing the spool from the housing and building a custom axle for it using things at my local hardware store (includes a door stopper for a handle :) ). It works ok now but it was truly a piece of crap when I bought it. I told my LDS about it, suggested a different model which uses the same spool but a different housing and showed them my modifications on the bad reel. The better ones now hang in the store. The lesson is, *do* tell your LDS when stuff is crap. They need, and often appreciate, the feedback.

My LDS has never tried to sell me anything. They answer questions about products, but have never actually tried to get me to buy anything.
Well, actually... the other day they tried to get me to buy one of those neoprene mask strap covers with a picture of a naked woman on it, and I almost did, but decided against it.
But that was the only time! :out:
That's not to say that I haven't made a few stupid purchases of my own, though... like:
SeaQuest AirSource
One of those stupid little plastic things shaped like a mouthpiece that are supposed to hold your octopus.
One of those little battery powered "light sticks" for night diving.
They even discouraged me when I was eyeballing a spare-air (back when I was a newbie). Kind of made me wonder why they even carried the thing.
I have heard the owner recommend the dry-snorkel to a few people, though. So they're not perfect. A few things do fall through the cracks. :out:
They've been really great. Unfortunately, they are the type of shop that sells jacket bc's and split fins, so I think my purchases through them are going to get fewer and farther between.

I've tried a few different split fins. They aren't as bad as some, but they aren't very good either. I was surprised at how well the Apollos do work with different kicks. They don't compare to my Jets, but you can frog kick with them. In current is another story entirely. In current, I found splits to be totally useless. I'll stay with my Jet Fins, they are far superior.

Yes but with what kicks? Once in a while I get a student who has some experienced freind sell them on splits before they start the class. I haven't been able to teach any of them to kick. Out of despiration I took several different split fins into the pool. I spent hours trying to use them in the hopes I would figure out a way to teach student who insisted on using them. They are terible for a frog (I can swim faster with my hands) Forget backing up. Turns are awkward and slow. You put on the breaks and nothing happens. If you need a sudden burst of power nothing happens. If you try a shufffle kick you just vibrate a little with no foreward movement. If they work at all it's only with a flutter and I don't flutter much. I will no longer allow students to use them. They can buy whatever they want but they can't use split fins in my class because they have no chance of learning the kicks I teach if they do. BTW, I have never seen a cave instructor allow a student to use them either. In fact, that's what made me decide to just avoid the whole problem and disallow them. After all the hassle I've had with those goofy things I can tell you how much weight I give scubadiving.com split fin data. LOL

We have brought together the following cars: Nascar, NHHRA top fuel funny car, Formula 1 racer, Cart (Indy) car and 76 Ford Pinto. In the straight line quarter mile competition the Funny car takes the grade, therefore it is the absolute best car no matter what anyone else says. Well, if you never actually have to stop, turn or stop for gas every third of a mile, it might indeed be the best car...on the other hand, if "explode on impact" is what you are looking for then it becomes a real toss-up with the Pinto in the lead
Same with splits in "pool trials" vs Jets.

I can't say that I have ever bought anything that is totally worthless. There is stuff that I don't use anymore, but I got quit a bit of use out of before moving on. Perhaps this is more a function of how I look at things. Sometimes you have to use something that is not quite right to really appreciate the gear that you ultimately upgrade to.
My top picks for wasting money on dive gear:
Hub (octopus in the pocket)
Titanium regulators (they work, but so does brass for half the price)
Wireless AI computers (not unsafe, but an expensive way to replace your SPG)
Scubapro Air 2 (too many ways to make this one unsafe as in short hose on primary and sea-cure mouthpiece)
Overstuffed tech wanabee BC's such as Rig, Recon, Outback, Raider and Chute 3.
Air Buddy (unsafe secondary reg)
Expensive luggage (thieves love it)
Titanium knives (they will last forever on the bottom)
Have I made enough people unhappy?

I don't know leadweight's reason, but Oceanic has a form fitting mouth piece for ¼ the price of the Seacure. The Oceanic is the size of a normal mouth piece so no gagging issues like with the Seacure. I'd say the Seacure is a waste of money.

I have to agree with Tooth that the SeaCure has been great for me also. The "gagging issue" is easily resolved by simply trimming the mouthpiece so it doesn't stick back so far into your mouth.
The worst purchase I have made was a SP AirII. However, it wasn't too bad in the end. I bought it from my wife's cousin, who threw in the attached SP Classic BCD for free.

My God!
There are a lot of shops trying to make that extra buck, forgetting how other people do have a brain also.
I am lucky to be an editor and writer for some diving mags and web sites like www.techdiving.us and so I get to review many new scuba products and equipment and get to keep most of it FREE. Yep, FREE. Just got a new DPV and a new camera housing to do a review, compliments of the manufacture!
I get free air fills because I also have my own compressor.
If you are ever in CT, get in touch.
Thanks for the offer.

I also got talked into one of those @%#@ dry snorkels, and the one time I really needed it in Fla, with a heavy chop and current, low on air, the %$#% thing got stuck closed and I counld'nt get a bit of air thru it as I was helping someone else, while waiting in a long line to get back on the boat. What a waste of $50.00;-0
