I think the Dive Rite Travel Wing (also copied by Scubapro as marketed as the TravTek wing) was one of the first (if not the first) "donut" wing for single tank diving.

I believe larger "donut" wings existed prior to the Travel Wing - the more recent "revival" of the "donut" design, this time for doubles, was undertaken by Halcyon (Evolve series wings) and Deep Sea Supply at around the same time (late 2005, iirc...).
 
Couldn't you say horse collars were the first donut wings, in a way at least? Basically, only where and how they were worn changed.
