What a shocker!!!!!
I ordered a dive knife from LP the Tulsa something or other. The problem is its the size of a sword. I was thinking I could return it but the price I paid and the shipping cost just don't make sense. By the time it would be all said and done I would have paid $25 in shipping so I'm stuck with it. Problem is where do I mount this thing, definitely not my calf makes me look like rambo. Any ideas

what if I have to fight off some sharks. I could cut them in half with this thing. Ya and then I'll mount it on my wall and brag to all my dive buddies......:bonk:

Sounds good to me!
The important thing is to look cool...big knives look cool and impress the non-diving fraternity. If you strap your sword to your back, Samurai-style, and tell them that it's for battling sharks and giant squid, you'll gain brownie points :D
Seriously, what are equipment manufacturers thinking of producing kit like this? The last time I bought a knife the LDS tried to sell me a huge stiletto job that would have been more suitable for carving the turkey than cutting through netting (or battling sharks!).
Hey, Bluespace, any chance of a few bob? I was hoping to invest in some nice new diving gear but times are hard, don't you know.

Big knives have their uses - if you see a shark, stab your buddy with it.

The Halycon kinfe is actually an Akona (I think). That is nice and small...easy to stow out of the way but sharp enough to be useful, etc.

I believe the Halcyon is the "blunt-tip" model. If you need, I can take a photo of the thing in my hand so you can get sense of size...

If you're a handy DIY kind of guy, you can check out instructions from this site (http://home.earthlink.net/~toddclagett/NovaTech/knifesheath.htm) by ScubaBoarder Dave Dalton, and make your own. Small, cheap, and it gets the job done. Plus, you'll have the Betty Crocker Seal of Approval. :D

And took a picture of my knife. This should give you a sense of exactly how big it is.

I prefer a lockback/folding knife. It stores nicely in a BC pocket when closed. Also consider a pair of EMT shears ---- not as macho as a huge pointy knife, but better at cutting line.
http://www.diversdirect.com/scripts/ecatalogisapi.dll/Item?Item=16339&Template=9990000001000999&Group=75 worked will for me, but I have replace this 3-1/2" knife with much smaller 2" one.

I wouldnt use a folding knife that you store in a pocket as a primary cutting tool. If you really needed to get to that knife when you are in a stressful situation, you may have trouble getting at it. I dont like that idea of a folding knife. Looks like a good idea on paprer, but not in the water...
I dont know, maybe i just like my life a little, and I want to be able to get to my knife in seconds.

I have 3 cutting tools:
Shears, on a boltsnap in my pocket.
Small Knife, found on a dive, in a sheath on my waist
and..
One BFK, usualy in my dive kit, and sometimes straped to my leg.
I use this for one thing. Stabing into the sand on the bottom of the river to hang onto against the rushing current an Morrison ON. Works great, looks cool and the only place I ever wear it.

I have about 3 inches of bicycle tire that I threaded over my harness. Its back by the left d-ring on my waste. I store a lock knife there.
Anyone else do this?

I agree. When you need a knife you should be able to find it blindfolded and with either hand. Speed isn't really the main concern if you ask me. To me the main issue is that once you're entangled in something every extra motion you make to get your knife is likely to make things worse.
Personally (we have a lot of nets in the water where I live) I carry two knives. One on the left shoulder and one on the waist strap. I attached a loop of bungie to both of them so the loop is out of the way when it's in the sheath but you can put your finger through the loop when you take it out. It's smaller than a lanyard and makes it less likely that you'll drop the knife. Nothing would wreck your day more than dropping your knife in the middle of cutting your way out of a net.
