So, the wife wants to vacation in Mexico and is totally cool with me taking 5 days of it to get a GUE cave1 class in too. (how cool is that?!) I was curious if anyone else has taken any GUE courses from the guys down in Mexico?? Any pointers? Anyone in particular you would recommend?

I already know learning there is going to spoil me, but how could I pass this up? I mean, I'm already going to be there, so no extra cost for a flight to FL, great place to relax after the course, etc etc.

Whattya think??

I always get yelled at for ignoring my wife when I dive on vacation!! good for you! I just did a dive in one of those cenotes in mexico, it was nice. Hope you have fun. maybe you can do a cenote/cavern/cave whatever, a little warm up for your cave 1.

best,

buck

Check out Nicolai Toussaint at http://akumaldircenter.com, he's a great guy and is teaching GUE classes in Mexico. Considered to be one of the best divers in Mexico.

I will second that. Besides training with one of the best, you will have a great time diving with him. He takes the work seriously, but has fun at it.

Speedster,

About a month ago while taking my Tech 1 with Andrew I posed the question... If I wanted to take Cave 1 in Mexico, who's the best?

AG: Christophe!

What if I wanted to take it in Florida?

AG: Don't. Go take it with Christophe.

This is also just one month after Andrew did a 14,000 ft dive (average depth 300 or 360' I forget which) with Nick.

Hope that helps.

Hi there!

I'm a NSS/CDS cave diver. I made my full cave course in Quintana Roo, Cancun, Mexico. The instructor was Bil Phillips, one of the must great cave diver in the World!!!

Go to www.hiddenworld.com or write an email to Bil to: Bil@Speleotech.Com

Hope this can help you!

I just got back from Mexico yesterday. I did Cave 1 with Christophe Le Maillot and Aquatech / Villas de Rosa and have to say that it was absolutely a great experience. Christophe is an excellent instructor and a really great guy. The caves in Akumal really are stunning. I would definitely chose Mexico over Florida. You get less flow, more bottom time, better cave, and get to see a bit of Mexico as well. Christophe seems to also much more availability than the Florida instructors. Check out http://www.cenotes.com/ and http://www.dir-mexico.com/ . I can't recommend doing it in Mexico with Christophe enough.

It's hard to imagine that if one was taking cave in Florida that AG wouldn't recommend David Rhea or one of the other fine instructors down there.

In defense of the Florida cave guys I should have went a little further. When I inquired who to take Cave 2 with, David Rhea was the name given.
Andrew was of the opinion that the Mexican caves were better for your cave 1 class and Christophe was the best person to teach an initial class. Andrew just thought he had the best personality for Cave 1, i.e. could foster an intense love for the caves.
He also thought that the Florida caves with their higher flow were better for Cave 2. He recommended Rhea because he would push you to your limits and then some, and would ensure you would be the best you could be upon finishing the class.
This isn't to say that the other guys are not superb. Just for me who must travel a great distance anyway (and therefore could go pretty much anywhere) Andrews opinion was that this was the route he would go.

Hope that clears it up some. Didn't post the rest because the original question only asked about Cave 1 in Mexico.
