The public hearing on turning Smitty's Cove into a Marine Park will be held in Whittier at 7PM, Tuesday, July 8th. We would like to see divers attend to show support for the park. By turning it into a Marine Park we can continue to have a safe place to dive and train new divers. It will also protect the artificial reef project placed in the cove.

Both divers and kayakers use the cove for recreational purposes. If you have any kayaker friends share this email with them. We also need environmentalists to help us protect the nursery-like qualities of Smitty's Cove. Both vertebrates and invertebrates lay their eggs in the cove. The cove provides many protected areas for the babies to hide while they grow to maturity.

Just to follow up, the planning commission had a hearing on 7-8 and based on public input and other factors, voted to establish the marine park. It now goes to the city council for final action, probably next month.
