glad you pointed it out. Being new here, I was starting to think that you had to have voting options on your messages. 
Yeah...Basic Scuba Discussions forum needs a name change to Poll Central!

That's right. But I think that a psychological factor is involved here. Look at the number of replies in the poll thread - I think it is bigger in general. May be it is very easy to vote in the poll without replying - kind of half-reply and then it is not far to actually writing your own message.
By this the poll threads are more attractive to the author - the life of the thread is guaranteed.
BTW, there is nothing wrong in this poll discussions IMHO.
