The City Council is scheduled to have a public hearing on Smitty's Cove on August 5th at 7pm. I would appreciate as much participation as possible. If you can't make it to the hearing please send e-mails of support for making Smitty's a Marine Park.

Some of the highlights that should be covered are:

It's the last safe place where divers can easily enter the water from shore in South Central Alaska.

It has historically been used to train divers in a safe environment.

Over $200,000 has been spent to install and maintain the artificial reef. Boats anchoring in the middle of the reef is damaging it.

Prince William Sound Area Use Plan and the DNR Coastal Management Plan both state that it needs to be protected for recreational uses.

Divers, kayakers, boaters, fishermen have historically used.

Local residents picnic and swim there.

Super!

It is a long way down there for me. But it is nice to know you "locals" have it and that it is available for the rest of us when we can make the journey.
