2008 October Shoot Out Rules

INTRODUCTION
The October Shoot Out (“OSO”) above all is a social event and a time for people who enjoy Spearfishing to assemble together and enjoy each other’s company. In making the rules, we have made every effort to make the OSO as safe as possible.

TOURNAMENT DATES AND LOCATION
A Captain’s Meeting will be held on Sunday Sept. 28, 2008 at 5:30 pm. Tournament participants do NOT have to be present at the Captain’s Meeting if they have pre-registered, but are strongly encouraged to try to make the meeting. The location of the Captain’s meeting ?????

The Captain’s Meeting will serve a couple of different purposes:
1. A last minute Q&A regarding rules will be done, starting at 5:30PM.
2. Late registrations can be handled at this time for those who have not pre-registered.

The Tournament will be held starting Saturday, Oct. 1, 2008 and Ending Oct. 31 2008 at 5:pm. Participants can start shooting upon sufficient light, and shoot the full Month of Oct.

Participants agree and promise that only fish shot on Wednesday October 1 through Oct. 31, 2008, will be presented for weigh-in.

The weigh-in will be at Gary's Gulf Divers any day (Oct. 1 - 31) during business hours.

The Awards Ceremony will be on Saturday November 1, 2008, at the VIP Lounge next to Gary's Gulf Divers (25814 Canal Rd, Orange Beach, Al. 36561)

FORMAT
This is an aggregate style fish tournament. As such, points are awarded for each fish turned in. One point or partial point is given for each pound or partial pound of the fish’s weight. For example, a 3.4 pound snapper would be worth 3.4 points.
There will be a maximum of 20 points given per fish in every category. Points from all categories will then be added for your final point total (i.e., your “aggregate score”).

After you have weighed your fish, you will be presented with a slip that you must sign, acknowledging that you accept the weights as stated on the slip. If you dispute your fish weight, it must be done while at the weigh-in table. If you dispute someone else’s fish, you must do so at the time they weigh-in.

CATEGORIES
Amberjack: Minimum Size 28"

Flounder: Minimum size 12"

Grouper: Minimum size 22"

Sheepshead: Minimum size 12' ( for this tournament)

Snapper: Black:(Gray or Mangrove) Minimum size 12"

Trigger Fish: Minimum size 12"

YOU CAN WEIGH ONE FISH PER CATEGORIE PER DAY BUT ONLY YOUR BIGGEST FISH FROM EACH CATEGORIE WILL BE POSTED TOWARD THE FINALS.

* Note: measurement of fish will be based on the current measurement to fork or overall as required by the Alabama Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission no matter where the fish was harvested.

PRIZES AND TROPHIES
As stated, this is an aggregate tournament. There will be at least 6 Places (1 through 6) Prizes will be CASH based on the number of entries.

There will (ALSO) be a total of eight (8) Trophies up for grabs:

1. 2008 OSO Champion / 2. Largest Amberjack / 3. Largest Flounder /
4. Largest Grouper / 5. Largest Sheepshead / 6. Largest Snapper (black) / 7. Largest Trigger / 8. Team

The 2008 OSO Champion (best overall aggregate score), shall be awarded his or her trophy, and have first pick at the prize table. All “Largest Fish” trophy winners will be awarded their trophy, plus take their turn at the prize table as dictated by their aggregate total.

METHODS OF HARVEST
Fish presented for weigh-in may NOT be powerheaded. Fish may be harvested either Freediving, or with use of SCUBA. In order to be eligible, the person weighing the fish must have speared and brought or sent the fish to the surface, without the assistance of another diver.

BEST Team
The 2008 OSO will include a “Team” award. In the interest of making this fair, a three person Team should be on equal footing with a six person team. Consequently, the winner will be determined by the team with the highest diver average aggregate score, based on the top three individual scores on each team.

See the following examples to further explain the best team rules:

1. Team One has only two shooters on their vessel. Boat One is not eligible to participate in the team competition, because there must be at least three registered contestants on the team to compete for team award.

2. Team Two has three shooters. Their aggregate total is 240. All shooters will be counted on Team Two, because the top three shooters are counted, and 240 is their score.

3. Team Three has six shooters. The top three shooters on that team had the following scores: 90, 85, and 80. Their aggregated score is 255. The other three shooters are not counted, as only the top three are used to compute aggregate score.

Please fill in the NAME of the team you will be on, which is located on the registration form. We cannot be responsible for a correct team score if you do not name the team you are on.

DISQUALIFICATION AND PROTEST
We will have a protest committee available. It will be comprised of the lead weighmaster, the event owner, and a third person chosen by the event owner. Protests must be filed at the time fish are weighed (yours or someone else’s). We reserve the right to disqualify individuals for suspect fish, unsportsmanlike conduct, or disruption. If you have a dispute, we will do everything possible to address it. We just ask for courtesy, and your participation in this event means that you will accept the committee’s majority decision in a respectful manner, without further recourse.

WEIGH-IN PROCEDURE
No ties will be considered. An entry must exceed the weight of the previously entered fish.
Decisions by the WEIGHMASTER are final!

RULE CHANGES
OSO Rules may be changed until Oct. 1, 2008. We do not anticipate many rule changes and any future changes should be minor. All rule changes will be posted on Gary's Gulf Divers, Full Service Dive Shops, Orange Beach, Alabama Registrants are responsible for making sure they have checked for rule changes up until Oct. 1, 2008

I have a question if you don’t mind. Since this will be a Month long tournament will you keep updated results posted on the Web so it will be easier for the competitors to keep of with the scores and weights? And what shops they dive out of?

I’ll ask this before others get the chance will there be and if so what do the T-shirts look like?
