What if I have no primary health insurance?
What will DAN cover if I take a DCS hit or some other misfortune befalls me?

I believe it will cover. Read http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/insurance/preferredcert.pdf

I took the info in this to mean it would cover anything in the Benefit A section on page 6-7. It does not make mention of requiring a primary insurance source in order to be covered in the Certifying Clause on the first page either. Note this is the policy certificate for the Preferred Plan. Other levels of insurance may differ.

Disclaimer - I'm not an insurance guy, play one on TV, or stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. I'm just some knucklehead that replied to your message very early on a Thursday morning :)

I'd call DAN to confirm my understanding of the policy.

DAN is a secondary provider, meaning they will not pay unless your primary provider does not. However, if you have no primary, then DAN would become your primary by default. If you have no primary, that's when you need DAN the most; otherwise you have nothing.

I just got DAN Insurance for the first time as it became the recommended insurance. Anyway I discovered after I purchased the insurance that DAN does not pay up front. So, should you have a medical emergency be prepared to pay up front and then get reimbursed. Just read a story about a lady whose husband had a heart attack and she had to fork out $28K up front as re quired surgery.

I told the guy I spoke with at DAN that I was under the impression that this was the whole purpose of purchasing their insurance was so you did not have to pay up front, but they just got snarky with me. Then he told me DAN was secondary, but that some of the SSS clinics will accept DAN. When I asked for a list of SSS clinics (what ever they are) he could or would not provide me the info. Very frustrating. I have also sent DAN an email requesting more info, but no response so far.

You can pay $21.00 for the Umbrella Package and it upgrades the medical coverage to primary.
I phoned DAN and this is per trip, so you would have to pay the $21.00 every time you went on a dive trip
