I an heading in the direction of tech diving..would I be better versed with a computer of bottom timer?

unless you buy something like the VR3, you will bend the hell out of any "rec" computer you buy. Take my word for that!

You will be cutting tables using software and slates anyway. At this point in technology, the B/T rules.

Pull up a cozy chair, get a drink of your choice, dim the lights, and then head over to the computers section of Scubaboard. There is at least one HUGE thread which should either:
