Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't diving on a Friday make it "Good Friday"?

Well, Cat and I were looking for somewhere to go diving on friday, this looks good, assuming it's going to be reasonable for beginners.

Although getting down to Belleville for 10:30 is going to mean an Ugh-early start to the day :(

Does ducks do equipment rentals? We're going to need tanks, and I'm going to need a BC and regs; somehow I doubt we'll be able to pick those up from a shop around here before we leave that morning. (Could get them the day before, but hey, if I can save the cost of an extra day's rental...)

I can always bring a couple of extra tanks, but don't have a spare BC any longer (sold it before Christmas). If that helps, let me know.

What size for BC? I think I still have a freebie owed to me by a shop, for you dude, I can check

I have to be in Kingston on Friday to help a friend out with some stuff and I have decided to stay overnight. Any chance anyone wants to get together to have another OFWF dinner in Kingston on Friday or a lunch on Saturday?

Just a thought! :)

If I get the details for the dive with Doppler, I was planning to hang my hat in Kingston (or Brockville) so I didn't have to get up to early for the diving on Saturday... so tentatively, Friday sounds good for me.

Anyone else?

Can you provide any links to info on this site (what's to see, what vis is likely to be, parking, entry, etc.) Are people likely to be doing more than one dive? It's quite drive from here (assuming I can talk my buddy into it). I was planning on hitting the pool Thu eve, but real open water sounds better.

On the rental front (jrtonkin), I think most stores around here would consider a Thu eve pick up and a Sat am return, to be a one day rental. My LDS doesn't open Sunday, and I know a Sat afternoon pick up and a Monday return is a one day.

DivingGal

jrtonkin

something to consider for rental -- Friday is Good Friday and by law most things must be closed, so even if you rented Thursday, and returned Saturday they shouldn't be charging you....

And/or contact information please for canuckdiver, Ontario Diver and Doppler (?)
I will be reachable via jrtonkin (for those with his #) after about 10:45 pm Wednesday or PM me for my cell#, please.

Wow - and here I was concerned that I'd have no-one to dive with this weekend. now it's just a question of logistics and figuring how much caffeine to pour into jtronkin in the am (enough to get him moving but below the lethal level - now what did I do with my tox. book? :D )

On the topic of logistics - Groundhog246: what is your take on the approximate drive time from KW to the site?

The dinner idea sounds good but - Kingston? Already a lot of driving for me :(

duck's dive is a dive shop south of picton at point traverse.

they have a small rock shore just behind the shop that has a barge and an old diving bell in about 60' of water.
parking should be no problem for up to about 6 cars or so, if we meet up at the denny's in belleville beforehand, some of us could carpool to cut down on the number of vehicles.

cat, for contact info, please PM me, I'll forward it that way ;)

I'n not sure exactly where the dive site is. I'd estimate about 3 hours, less if you drive fast (I don't push it very hard anymore, I'd rather leave earlier and relax, than rush and arrived stressed). Being a holiday, traffic through Toronto shouldn't be an issue.

I hope the weather forecasters are wrong, latest is snow or freezing rain, Friday am.

If I may make an announcement, our 14YO (15 in July) signed up for OW today. First lesson next Tue. I may be more excited than he is.

If freezing rain -- sorry, the deal will be off for me. Like Cat & jtronkin I have a drive (2.5hr). I don't like venturing that far with a mess on the road -- start the prayers or I'm not coming ;-0

Friday

Saturday

For anyone that has not dove there and experienced the clarity of water, you will find this a treat. I dove there last year in late May. 50 ft viz but here's the bad news: VERY cold water. It was 48 oF and last winter wasn't as severe as this one. Nice barge and diving bell to see in the 40-45ft range within a couple 100 yards of shore. Further off shore you have 60 ish depth with a very nice and predictable shore line slope. Great spot for those considering a night dive too.

Something for the wetsuit divers to consider - bring a hotwater thermos and hot chocolate to help for a second dive. They do tank fills but I'd check with them as a courtesy, in case they have a logjam of divers using the shore and staying on-site at their cottages...

As well, make sure the lead car knows how to get there - it is a real scavenger hunt finding this place on the Island.

For you navigational wiz kids: watch out for the diving bell metal messin' with your compass. It is quite entertaining watching people smash their lovely compasses/'puters into the dirt/hand as if this will fix the problem...

Enjoy!

Neither wind, nor rain, nor dark of night shall keep us from our appointed dives. The river turning crunchy just might though. But since that hopefully won't happen....

Now the next question (yeeesh, I spend too much time asking questions rather than answering them)... So is this an all-day bunch of dives you've got planned, or do Cat and I need to find somewhere to go for friday afternoon? And if so, does anybody have any recommendations?

I have a family function in the evening, so I'll have to call it a day fairly early for me (3:00 or so), but there are two sites that are actually very close together, little bluff park makes a good site for a second dive for the day.

Tom

Canuck Diver, Cat, jrtonkin, Diver Joe and I all got together and had a fine dive.

Weeeelllll. Ok jrtonkin's reg went into freeflow twice, and on exiting my knee gave out and -- well I warmed up the air bit. A fine time though. (I have photo proof... but they have to be devloped first)

We had so much fun we planned to join Doppler at Rockport the next day. Unfortunately Canuck Diver had a transportation issue, and a problem with an ear, so it was just the four of us. Fine time again. Weeelll -- so Cat's LP was leaking a bit, and I discovered the LDS hadn't given me a full fill (only 1200 -- I know my fault for not checking before I left the shop, but I've never had a problem before, so just a reminder to myself).... Still a fine time.

I do think Cat probably wins some type of an award for driving great distances to go diving!

My buddy Jerry and I went for a dive at Burleigh Falls on Good Friday. The water looked a little high (it's up a foot) and it looked a little swift (all gates on damn are open.) Dah You Think?
Did this sway our intent, WELL NO! We came to dive. We met Tinman and his buddy Brian B just comning out of the sourth Bay, telling us how swift the current was.
We looked at the south bay which was the safe bet, and said NAW that for newbies!
So the "GUY" thing was to go into the torrent, down the cable and if it's too strong, follow it out and swim around the big rock and into the south bay for a safe exit, Right? (well sort of) We made it down to the cable ok, hand over hand on the rocks, we dropped into the valley where I expected the current to drop, but no way it picked up. I found myself wrapped around the cable as it drops down to the bottom like wet laundry on a cloths line. Jerry got caught an upwelling and almost shot to the surface. We regrouped on the cable, caught our breaths which were pumping, just like our hearts, and we made out way out the cable around the corner to the channel. We followed our plan heading south and then heading to 240° towards the big rock.
Well I'm down to 1000 psi and Jerry's at 800, we are totally lost, so we surfaced. We found ourselves 2/3's of the way across to the far side and drifting north. We stayed on the surface and headed due south towards the dock at the bottom of south bay. It was a long swim, but we managed to get out of the main current . Once we were across the main channel the current eased up and we headed more westerly to come into the south bay. What a swim! We were exhausted! After a rest we made our way into the south bay, crawling along the rocks like mud puppies throught the shallow channel where ther is about1 1/2 feet of water. We then dived along the bottom to crawl through the little channnel and surfaced at the shore. We rested again on the rock seats and took off our fins. Then we walked up on shore and back to my blazer.

Next time you think the current is a little too stiff, it probably is!

...I guess I should have waited around, could have practiced my rescue skills... We would have given it a whirl but Brian B decided he wanted to try his wetsuit out and I didn't want him to become an Ice Cube float in mid channel while I sat comfi in my drysuit. Considering your experience, I'm glad we did the mundane dive this week. Brian B has decided the drysuit is tight but preferable when the water temp is still in the 30s! We'll take the current ride next weekend and see how our nav skills fare...

That was quite the weekend - diving is the only activity I participate in where I find myself helping men I have never met before don and remove tight rubberized clothing (that's my story and I'm sticking to it)
