I've read a few people diss billy rings - saying to get standard D-rings instead. I'm about to buy FredT's harness kit, which includes billy rings for the shoulder and hip rings.

Why avoid billy rings? It seems like they would make clipping easier because they'll never fall flat against the webbing.

So what's the deal? Should I opt for standard D-rings instead?

I don't prefer fixed rings for the shoulder straps, I use the 45deg type. I have fixed on my left waist and canister light for stages as they work much better.
Use what you want.

I like the regular D-rings since they fold flat against the webbing and are harder to accidently snag on something.

I like fixed billy rings. I find they are easier to clip off various kit to. 45 up top, 90 down bellow. :eek:ut:

this is probably a stupid question. what is a billy ring?

It's sort of a D-ring welded onto a D-ring keeper. The idea is that it keeps the D-ring from falling flush with the webbing, thus keeping it easy to clip on and off.

I ended up getting standard D-rings with keepers (came with the Halcyon harness), and they seem to have a tendency to stick out a bit anyway.. I don't anticipate it being a problem.
