I'm going to Roatan in Dec. with a local dive group. Does anyone have any information they could share about Roatan and the diving there...(viz, water temp, marine life, etc) Also, does anyone know anything about the Bay Islands Beach Resort on Roatan? Thanks for any info

would like to go soon.. does anyone want to put a trip together for Utila or Roatan (or a liveaboard in the area) for sometime in Setember? Wife can't go. I'm open to suggestions on destinations, one week, Carribean. Basically, I need a buddy for last minute travel, preferably unemployed and likes to dive.

A family I dove with in Cozumel complained about the noseeums, said they were unbearable at times. I can't recall what time of year they were there.

mattiedread, I was in Cozumel a couple of years ago in July. Was the best diving I've ever done and the best vacaction I've ever had. In every area, it exceeded all of my expectations. Great resort, great dive shop, great weather, and did not experience the noseeums. I would go back in a heartbeat!

I was talking about the noseeums in Roatan, the family was unanimous in how horrible they were. Last time I was in Coz the vis was 35-60 (rained a lot). Still had fun.

We enjoyed our trip to Roatan immensely. It is one of the top travel and diving destinations. We stayed at CoCoview. It is very dedicated to diving. The noseeums are there but you can use Skin So Soft mixed with water or Cactus Juice as a preventative.

Calvin's Crack and Mary's Place were my favorite dives.
We enjoyed West End because it wasn't overly commercialized.
They have been taping Temptation Island there for the last few months. Will probably screw up everything. The people are great and we can't wait until our next trip.

Enjoy the trip and give us a report when you return

Thanks for the clarification on the noseeums. If they are that bad, I guess I'll just have to spend more time under water *grin*

lildiver,
We were on Roatan in April. Nice place. There's a '97 Pisces Books called "Roatan & Honduras' Bay Islands" with very nice pix and lists of dive sites per island along with difficulty and a minimum about anything else.

I'd recommend Lonely Planet or Footsteps or Rough Guide for hotels and places to stay and landside matters.

Here's a link to Roatan Charter: Roatan Charter

We've used them before and I'm currently lining up a trip to Cayos Cochinos (nearby and in the Bay Islands). Trip report later... You can see some pictures and prices of some of the resorts here. Works also for Belize.

And another one for general Roatan information: http://www.roatan.net/

Hope this helps!

Lildiver -

Sounds like you've already got the hotel picked. Anyway, for future reference and as general information, you might also keep another Bay Island in mind - Guanaja. We went there in Aug., 2000 and had a wonderful trip - great resort, great diving, great food, beautiful scenery, etc., etc. We stayed at Posada del Sol and thought it was a real treat! Not a lot of non-diving activity though. The only negative was the noseeums, which could be very annoying but certainly wouldn't keep me from returning.

One of the other posts mentioned Roatan Charters which is who we used as well to plan the Guanaja trip.

Have fun!

I want to thank everyone for your replys on Roatan. My trip with a local dive shop, so the resort and so forth were already picked. In all the replys, no one has mentioned the water viz or the temp. Could someone elaborate on this, please?

Thanks again,

~lildiver

Water temps in Roatan in December will be 78-80. The vis depends on what side of the island you're on. The south side around Coco View is 70 to 100ft. It depends alot on the rain run-off and since December is their rainy season, the vis may be a bit less than that.

I love Roatan! In the rainy season, be sure to take a lightweight poncho, windbreaker or something. My first trip there was in October and it rained 20 hours a day for the whole week. I didn't mind being wet so much but damp sheets got real old, real quick!

And don't worry about the no-seeums. Use the spray-on Cactus Juice and you'll be fine. The little buggers like the salt on your skin so as soon as you get off the boat, rinse off with fresh water, apply the Juice and they'll leave you alone. They seem to be worse late in the day.

These are just minor incinveniences....you'll have a blast!
