Help with AVID fill valve maintenance

While replacing the stock fill regulator I unscrewed the corragated fill hose connection to the BC. In doing so the rubber washer/seal fell out.

Is there "right" side that should face the BC side? Both sides look more or less the same.

Should I lubricate the washer/seal before reinstalling?
