cheap travel suggestions from CA to SA and back??

I will be traveling to Utila, Honduras in the fall and have hopes to spend some time traveling through Nicaragua down to Brazil, SA. Any suggestions on how to make the travel w/o spending lots of money? I will be with 2 other people, one of which speaks fluent Spanish. Is there buses that are safe and inexpensive to take? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Also, has anyone dove at Little Corn Island yet? How is it?
